Hey all, I have a quick question about retrofitting an electric tachometer on my 1992 851.
I want to delete the tachometer drive off of the cylinder head and install one of the more slender cam caps on that camshaft end. Will chopping off the end of the camshaft that protrudes to spin the tach drive negatively affect engine performance in any way? I will be making sure that the bearing surface on the end of the cam stays where it is and does not have any burrs on it or anything like that. does anyone have any experience with this or perhaps even an educated guess?
Before anyone asks, I am building a custom 851 because the one I bought was a friend's retired track bike that had already been bastardized beyond putting back to stock. I want to make a streetable bike out of it. I have an electric tachometer that I will be using (hence not needing a tach drive), it is from a Bimota DB3 Mantra. I am using a cooling system from a 996 which interferes with the tachometer drive, which is why I do feel strongly about removing the tach drive all together.
Thanks for any input!

Yes it will work OK without any running problems. I removed the mechanical rev counter drive from my motor.
Or you could fit a cam from a 916 etc.

Yes, as Steve said, you can do that. I wouldn't bother cutting the end off. Any cam from a 916, 748, 996 (except droop head cans) will work. I have lots of them sitting around and will send you one if you are willing to pay the postage. I also have the end caps.
