Decals and border colour

Hi All,

I was looking at some decals recently that I bought some time ago and never used, they are the big side fairing "Superbike 888 Desmoquattro" ones, but noticed that the border colour is quite coppery compare to the originals which seems to be almost silver.

What's the correct border colour for these decals ? and does it vary depending on year model ?? My 888 is a 1994 Strada, so pretty much one of the last, but I can't be sure the decals on the bike are actually original.

Any guidance appreciated.

I would like to know this also. I'm currently repainting my SP5 but looking at the decals I have purchased from Motographix in Sydney the outline colour is copper. The decals currently on the bike have a gold outline. Motographix have told me that the decals fade to gold which I think is a load of BS.

I have a feeling that the outline on Stradas is silver and SP's gold. Can someone that owns an original unpainted Strada and SP5 please confirm this.

I have seen 3 also. Silver, gold and copper. My SP5 has the silver outline decal on one fairing and the rest of the bike has the gold outline.

Does anyone know where I can buy the decals with the gold outline?

Tell them the colour and also if you want the decal straight or curved. The fairing is curved, so they supply a decal that is curved so that the lines are straight when applied. The guy that painted my fairings preferred to have the decal straight and to deal with the curve of the fairing.

Image works supplied mine for an SP5 and they have the gold outline. My original spare 93 tank which I've just fitted has the copper colour. ( original tank securing bracket has fractured) No one has commented on the colour difference as yet. I'm riding it to the WDW held at Misano in a couple of weeks, round trip of about 5K for me and I'm sure someone will pick up on it.

1994 Strada side fairing decal background colour

Johnboy, one of my '94 888 Stradas had original paint on its side fairings, with the background colour to the transfer being a bronze metallic colour - it wasn't copper or gold, and almost had a metal flake effect under bright light; it certainly wasn't a plain, straight colour.

The closest I've managed to get to it has been through a custom bike painter Tim at TJC Design in Bristol, UK.

If you really want closest to original, I'd suggest you find yourself a pukka painter, and get him to match and stencil etc., based on an original fairing part, if you have one.

NB The font of many replica transfers is also not correct, but I'm probably opening a whole can of worms on this one - esp. the letter C in Ducati on the '93 and '94 bikes.

You won't get the profile thickness on the surface with spray as its not a transfer, but you'll get the colours correct.....

Trogg, all the backgrounds I have seen have been metalic. The attached image is what I have described as copper, is yours like this or darker again?

I think I know what Phil means by the metallic affect, I think that's what I have on my left side panels. BUT, all others stickers are gold border, I.e. fuel tank "Ducati" and front fairing "Ducati", and even the right side panel on my 1994 Strada, so I suspect the side panel with metallic affect decal border was a replacement.

Confusing or what !

John and PGW - if I still had the Strada with the original bronze/ metal flake I'd send you pictures, sorry.

In the middle of a house move, so currently unable to check through my spare 888 bodywork to check background colours. The closest I've seen are on my '96 Superlight which still has its original bodywork - but that's in bits, in boxes ! Once I've got my shit together, I'll take some pictures and share them here with you. I'm pretty convinced the plain copper (w/o flake type sparkle) is after market, not OEM.

In the past I have had trouble finding suitable decals in the States. Not only are they not "metallic" they are laminated (3 layers for a tri-color decal) Way too thick to clear over and totally unusuable.

I need to source a full set for a '94 916. I want them as close to the originals as possible,,screen printed and metallic. Any suggestions for a vendor in the UK?
