Hi Guys

Dug the bike out of the garage and am going to get the wheels powder coated have had a look at the manual re removing the wheel bearings and it looks like the spacer tubes have a collar at each end to locate the inner diameter of each respective bearing though later it shows a pin punch locating the edge of the inner race.
If the inner collar has a locating shoulder i cant see how you would locate the endge of the boaring with a pin punch could you please advise the best way of removing the bearings.
Also any tips for removing the cush drives (preferable so they can be reused)

The best way I've found is a blind bearing puller. A handy tool. I also use it for rocker pins. (Put appropriate screw in end and use a hose clamp). The bearing spacer is just a tube, so it can be knocked to the side. I think that method is a bit hard on the wheel housing as you dont get an even removal. Like trying to beat in a bearing that has cocked off to one side.
Cush drive rubbers get cut out. Bastard of a job involving a hacksaw blade and skilled use of a cold chisel. I now have one of those pneumatic hacksaws, much easier on the hands.

I got the cush drive rubbers out of my rear wheel by using a large bearing puller on the outside and getting loads of tension on them, then using sharp blows on the rear using a copper mallet and a drift. As Griff said, it's a t**t of a job.

Thanks for the tips chaps. Ordered a blind bearing puller so will set to when it arrives. Were you able to reuse the cush drives NCR900 ?

Another good tip I saw was to use a Dynabolt in the smaller sizes as it acts like a small blind bearing puller

Just a little translation in English, I think that dynabolts are Rawlbolts over here in the Mother country.

Yes - I removed them to get the wheel repainted, and as they were undamaged and unworn I re-used them afterwards. They were still a tight fit when refitted, but a lot easier to drive in than to pull out. When removing them, get plenty of tension on them using your bearing extractor/rawlbolt tool, spay penetrating oil around the housing, and then use a solid hammer and good drift from behind (through the holes in the casting where the disc mounts) to 'shock' the cush rubber loose. Once you've unseated the cush drive it will start to move more easily. Good luck!

either way, heat is always good. lots of it (to the outside of the wheel hub) makes a real difference to the cush drives.

i use a bodgy puller which is an old bolt and some washers and a large tube that the drive can come out of the wheel into. works well.

Hi Brad, do you use a heat gun? Tradies hair dryer. :-)
Just wondering as max expansion is going to be around 220°C, but at 315°C weird stuff starts to happen with some aluminium.

Just made some crush washers out of sheet aluminium. Heat them to 169°C then quench in water. Perfect for the bottom bolts in 38mm marzocchi's. Cant say it was cost effective but. By the time I sharped the punch (big old industrial thing), and pissed around with getting things central etc, 3hrs went by. Got 4 lovely washers. Hand made dont you know. 😁

If you plan on reusing the cushies, just tape them up and spray over them, save you a ton of trouble!

Hi Chaps.

Blind bearing puller arrived a couple of days ago and it was a piece of cake to remove the bearings.
Tackled the cush drives with threaded bar with a couple of washers and 2 nuts at one end and a large socket (slightly larger than the OD of the cush drive) with a thick washer and nut on the other side. Had a mate with a large screw driver located in the back side of the wheel to initialy stop the 2 locked nut turning. The cush drives came out relatively easily trick was making sure the socket sat square the a few turns on the top nut and they "cracked " off and then wound out easily.
Wheels are now in for powder coating hopefully i will have them back for the TT !
