Having finally got time to take the new (Old) 851 for a roadworthy and ownership transfer I stopped at the local garage, topped up the fuel, adjusted the front tyre pressure and took off to my mechanic. Unfortunately I must of overinflated said front tyre as it immediately rose up and blocked my vision of where I wished to be going. While said overinflation caused no particular issues I had a sudden cool feeling in the groin followed by a burning sensation. On stopping at the next set of lights I found that the fuel cap and surrounds tend to leak, any ideas? The cap rubber is in good nick and feels tight to seal, I'm thinking the gasket between the tank and filler must be stuffed. On arrival at the mechanics I also found fuel drippping on the left hand side of the engine, great, bike fire with family jewels soaked in hydrocarbons. Nothing was mentioned to the mechanic as I wanted the roadworthy for transfer.
I'm thinking the breather inside the cap surrounds may be faulty but short of lifting the bike from the front it will be hard to tell where the fuels leaking from.
Any thoughts

Pull the fuel cap out of the tank and check the big green o-ring. If you remove the outer cap the inner fuel bung will come out if you back out the numerous tiny allen head set screws that are around the edge of the bung. then pull it out. It may come out hard if the last person in there didn't grease it well.
P.S. Are you positive that you had it completely latched? I took off once and got a fuel bath because I had not completely closed the lid.

as marvin has said, the sump will come out after undoing the 8 grub screws, no need to remove them completely just back them out. when you replace it use some rubber grease on the o ring, and if it needs to be replaced don't be tempted to skimp, make sure you get a fuel resistant one. while you're in there check the condition of the hoses, if they look split or cracked, replace them with in tank efi hose, add a new fuel filter while you're at it and make sure the breathers are all clear but do not use compressed air, you can split the weld on the top breather box.
it may be difficult to get the sump out but be gentle, the steel tank is quite strong, the alloy one is not. (not sure what year your 851 is)
