Battery Advice Please

Hi,

I have a '93 SP5. I need a new battery and have read the odyssey PC680 performs very well. Can anyone who's fitted one tell me if size-wise its a straight swap for the Yuasa, or any mods needed (busted right hand so mods are difficult)?

I noted the comments that it is not light - but that's fine.

The PC680 is wider than the OEM battery, you'll need to trim the lip off the bottom of the battery crate, or bend it out the way to get it in there.
I've run a PC545 in my 851/916cc bike for several years, it's smaller/lighter than the 680 fitting into the battery crate so easiliy that you have to pack it out with foam and hold it in with a rubber strap.
I've used the 545's for some years now without any problems, originally fitting one on the recommendation of a SP2 or 3 owner, who'd had one on his bike for several years.
I highly recommend the 545's for our 851/888's, unless you want something really featherlight like a Lithium battery?

Lighter and smaller and more forgiving if you forget to charge them - from my experience over the last two years

There are lots of rebranded ones from China about and I went for Shorai as a known brabd really

I fitted one (PC680) in my SP3 for well over 15 years ago (currently in my M900). No cutting involved. I will try to post a photo later today or tomorrow.

PC680MJ (metal jacket) fitted to my SP3 - no cutting. I did, however need to add a bit of foam on the sides to keep things put. A standard (no-jacket) version may require foam behind as well.

So where's the lip that holds the bottom of the battery in place, have you just bent it down or spaced the battery up over it?
Personally I feel/think the PC680 is overkill in the extreme, it also weighs as much as a small decent boat anchor.
Why saddle a sports bike with that much extra weight when a smaller one is more than up to the job?

Can't tell you. The only mods done to the bike since it was delivered to me by Eddie (with 557km on it) are the removal of the Michelin decals from the swingarm, an aftermarket front brake switch, and a vented carbon clutch cover. I have not bent, cut, or otherwise molested the batt box. Maybe that was an SP3SSSP-only specification and I have the only one? 😝

You actually have no real experience in fitting a PC680 to a 851/888, other than there is one on your bike...😏

The bike came to me with a standard wet Yuasa battery (probably the original) in the box as you see it. When the Yuasa crapped out, I put in the PC.

If you look at your pic', you can see that the top bracket stops the battery from walking out sideways.
On the standard un-adulterated plastic battery crate there's also a lip that stops the bottom of the battery from doing the same.
It's this lip that either needs cutting off or bending down because the PC680 is wider than the OEM item (not a problem for me but some don't like to deviate from standard), this lip appears to be missing in your pic'?
Either it's been removed by someone before you got the bike or it's been bent downwards when the PC680 was fitted?
This lip's defo' not here in your pic' so there's nothing to stop the battey from walking out at the bottom.

Some on here have reported that the PC680 fouls on the inside of the fairing panel because of it's greater width, batteries don't like rubbing against vibrating bodywork etc, they tend to split/crack if this happens IME.
When I fitted my smaller (but the same width) PC545 I spaced it upwards to avoid this, sitting it on a piece of foam rubber mat.
