Race Project 851 frame

Hi all, new here! And have some questions about my 851 frame, hope to get here some answers

Last year I've purchased an bare 851 frame to build an race bike for local races here in Belgium, it was a kind of a rare thing, I have 851 paperwork but it's modified with a 916 back frame and swingarm. I'm am wondering now what the history of this frame is...?
Anyone came across this kind of modification?
Also the frame number starts with ZDM851S3000, any clues there?

Now the frame is further modified to fit a 1000ds engine, perfect for the races I want to do...

From the pictures you have, it looks to me a 916/748/996 series frame with 851 bodywork. The rear set placement is the giveaway. Neither the older 851 or even all the way up to 94 888 had placement like that as well as the front forks are from a 748/916 (60 mm instead of 40mm).

How about a picture with the seat removed.
I think the subframe mount points will tell something as well what frame it is.

Here you have a pic of the bare frame...

The guys who custom made my exhaust headers told me, in front of the first engine attachment point it is a 851, as from the first attachment point on it is a 916 frame.
The thing I really want to now is what the VIN number on de the paperwork stands for: ZDM851S3000645

The strangest thing of this frame, it has a 851 ident plate on it, I have dutch 851 strada paperwork, the only problem is I can't find the VIN number on it.

My goal is to put this bike on the road, later on with, a 888 or 851 bodywork...

The VIN number is on the right side on the steering column.

Hi, can you tell us where you got the frame/bike from? Rudy / Leerkens Motofun?

About 2 years ago a very similar modified bike was for Sale just north of Amsterdam. 916 engine, really cool expensive gold coloured wheels, yellow, same bodywork including rearend, original Corse tank. I had an appointment to go and see it, and was offered it for very low price. However couldn't free up any time in my schedule so passed on it. It is a 851 frame, with a 916/748 rearend welded on.

Bike was originally constructed by StarTwin in Loenen in the Netherlands.

sorry for the late reply, idd got it from Rudy, the expensive stuff was removed, but got it for a fair price. I got the headers welded in Startwin, they idd recognized it partially, but couldn't remember correctly, the old friendly guy that welded the headers said he made the exhausts for sure some 20 years ago...

Raced it a few weeks back, and I'm very happy about the handling of it, also the 1000ds performs well!

The Vin I could find, but I have now a new vin plate installed, maybe later on I will put it on the road after purchasing a 851/888 road fairings set.

That's what it looks like to me also...
I can't see the point of modifying a 851/888 frame to single sided swingingarm spec, when it would be far easier/cheaper to actually use a genuine 748/9*6 frame???
The 9*6 frames canted the engine around and forward to give a better weight bias towards the front end, this was a step forward from the 851/888's.

The pics aren't good enough to see the headstock and I don't know what the VIN # actually is. Perhaps someone has either welded a 851/888 headstock in a 916 series frame or changed the numbers (perhaps to cheat!!??)

I went to the guys who's now apparently also modified it for my custom made header pipes, there they clearly stated that from the headstock till the first engine mount it is an 888/851 frame, from there on they welded an 916 frame on it..., probably, the headstock is also one of a early 916 to fit the 9*6 front suspension.

The reason why they did it..., probably related to date af manufacturer engine specs...who knows...

There's many ways to skin a cat, but TBH I'd have just used a 916 frame...
The last 888/926cc Corse customer race bikes were on sale at the same time as the 1st road going 916 Strada's.

It was just a complete frame with wheels and fairings, for a good price..., couldn't find a simular 916 package for that price BTW..., and an 999 frame would be the best choice, but here the same, to expensive.
This actual frame I have now, looked like, a nice to have, and a big improvement om my former 900ss race frame because I was continuously riding on the limits of that one and other reasons...

And it has still the potential to put it on the road, nice one of a kind, no...? Meanwhile, the right VIN number is now on the frame, next is customs and ducati for the correct papers... 😎
