bottom-end build how-to?

I've done plenty of top-end builds without issue, but looks like I'm going to do a full rebuild of a 851 motor sometime soon, but have thus far never delved into the mysteries contained within those crankcases.

Being mindful that I don't know what I don't know at the moment - can anyone recommend a good how-to guide: a basic guide of what I need to measure and check as it all starts to go back together? - after all, it would be heartbreaking to put it all together, only to find that I've not taken as much care as I should have done through ignorance.

I've got the Haynes ("the book of lies") for the 916, which will be pretty close I guess, and an early edition of the snyder book (which doesn't cover this level of detail, if I recall correctly).

Anything better out there?

I did my complete engine rebuild with the help of 3 manuals AND help from this forum which was invaluable. Reading over the threads will give you some idea... There were tons of pictures for each step (in these threads) but those were lost long ago.

When you are ready to dig in, start a thread and others can help you along the way.

Will do - thanks Robert - since posting above, I've also realised that the procedures will be largely identical to both the 916 and 900ss procedures in the Haynes books. Lots of photos and a build thread will fill in the gaps.

Its not hard, but you will need access to a primary drive puller. You'll also need a dail depth gauge and magnetic base for end floats, and some plasti-gauge for big end bearings. A couple of micrometers and inside bore gauges, feeler gauges, a clutch tool and a couple of torque wrenches. Bearing instalation drifts and an oven.

Grand - I was starting to compile a list of tools, so you've helped already! - I've got some of those - so will just need to pick up the missing bits in due course.

Primary drive puller... I use a hydraulic two legged puller.
Bearing instalation drifts... I use a suitable sized 1/2" drive socket.
But if you get the cases hot enough in the oven, the bearings (when taken out of the freezer) will just drop in with a sizzle.
Magnectic clamp for the dial gauge... I just bolt the adjustable arm to a suitably placed hole with a 6mm Allen screw.
A alternator rotor holding tool is very useful.
You don't need a special tool to hold/undo the half time shaft nut, you can wrap an old timing belt around the pullies, holding it in place with some Mole/Vice Grips but...
You will need a special "Peg" socket for the nut.
On my own motor I distroyed the nut using a Snap On socket for removing rounded nuts, replacing them with special Hex' cam shaft nuts from V Two in Australia, that can be used again and again.
