SP4 /S at Coys today

I think someone got a bonus today.

Coys had listed it as an SP4 but.....
It is no 55, has proper carbon tank, curved rad, smaller 888 decals
on fairing and proper Termi's.

Me thinks it's an SPS. It came from Italy. It made £17500 plus 15% commission so someone just bagged a £20K SPS IMHO

Interesting jackg.

I saw this in Coys catalogue along with a number of other Ducati's and couldn't work out how they had come up with a guide price of £18k -£22k, (plus commission), for a SP4. As beautiful as these bikes are, this is over the top. However, if this bike sold for £17,500 plus commission, the purchaser must have either been desparate for a SP4, or thought/realised that it had been mis-listed by Coys and indeed got himself a nice bike.

Does anyone know if there has been any recent sales/purchases of SP4S's to give an indication of possible values?

All the '92 model 851/888's had a curved rad', the SPS had a deeper/larger one though.

Yes, it had the larger curved rad of the SPS.

I've got a bit more info on it now. It was for sale in Italy last year at 55K Euros and it seems to be a real SPS.

Well done who ever bought it. I put a cheeky bid in but there seemed to be very little interest as Coys thought it was an SP4!

In February 2007 Ains who many of you probably know, compiled a list of known SPS owners, he produced a list on the DOC Forum, just showing bike numbers and some engine and frame numbers but not owners names.

He knew of numbers:-
001 was owned by the son of Rome Chief of police in 1992

IIRC? Mike "C" also holds a list for this exoctica.
I know that he was in touch with the factory/museum curator over this, maybe has got a bit farther with his list?

Don't be too exited about that bike...
It was for sale last year for around 28k euro in Italy.
When i was in Mugello for the GP i drove up to check it out... It had been used for racing and looked like it hadn't been cleaned for 20 years! The frame had been repainted and they used sandpaper!!! to get it visible again...

My advise to the potential buyer was not pay more than 20k euro, but they wouldn't sell for less than 28k...
So, Yes it's a real SPS but needs so much work!

It made 18000 Plus commission and Vat on the commission. I know as I paid for it and it is sitting very nicely next to my other, no.36. After very close examination it doesn't look like it has been raced but watch this space. There is very little wear and tear and hopefully this applies to the engine.

Marco, the guy who had to sell the bike in Italy, told me he remembered the bike was used for racing in the Italian championship. He just couldn't remember the name of the driver anymore...
He did know the owner so if you don't already have his name you could get in touch with him if you need/want more information!...

And as there is no service history the first thing i'd do is take the engine apart and change the bearings!

Hi Jarno, I also viewed it at Marco's in Italy. I'm going to have the engine stripped to see the condition. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated. Best, Al

The most important thing to check is if the crankshaft roller bearings have been replaced with stronger ball bearings! They can completely destroy the engine if not replaced on time...

The more technical guys on the forum must have some more specific advice on the engine!...

Thank you Jarno. It will go to a Ducati specialist. The engine may have been apart already as there is a bit of gasket excess.
