Anybody know about head stampings?

1988 heads.

Have a cast in date stamp
And additional stamp, presumed during assembly or later. Right up close to plug hole and hidden by plug cap rubber.

race mods documents indicate a C (competition?) and either a 1 or a 2 depending on state of tune.

Anybody know about these and any others?

on my head(851 1992)there aren't aditional stamp...
my head have a FT stamp on orizontal and vertical cilynder.but the FT stamp are on all heads...there aren't A,B,C stamps on my heads!

These stampings apply to Tricolore models and I wonder if they were made on 1989/90 models as well?

Anybody else able to check the front cylinder under the plug cap and see what's there?

mine is an sp3 91 and has A2 stamped on the head as you described .. dont know wot it means but hey ...

My 1990 851 eng no 1113 has D FT. The D was not hidden and the same size lettering as the FT.

for what it's worth, my is a 92, 851 strada with a cast date of 91 cast is FT and a M stamped in.

This may help. If you go to FILES,and go to " Mods 851 racing", you will see that on page 1 it refers to " Motor 851 superbike kit/'88", " Motor 851 Strada/'88, and "Motor Strada /'89. If you then go to page 27A, there is a ref to the heads. NOTES: To get the max, performance from the engine, it is possible to modify the heads. Before doing that,check the head printings, which are located near the spark plug hole:

1] If the head printing is 'C', the following operations can be carried out:
Head flattening, [skimming ?] , [see drawing etc];
Valve seats modified for larger valves, ie..33inlet and 29 ex [See drawing etc]

2] If the head printing is "C1", you may just modify the valve seats,[ See
drawing etc];

3] If the head printing is "C2", NO modification is possible, as the heads have already been modified.

To me it appears that it just refers to the year '88/'89 heads, but I may be wrong.

My SP3 is the same as Spike's (of course?) A2 and FT

so after making another come back ( this thread has made more come backs than the rolling stones ) still no one can say what the A means ? i,m resigned to the fact that its just a stamp similar to the early ones ,, but theres also a B stamped on the main body of the head in the same stamp ???
