New Non-Can Exhaust

Still waiting on the engine for the '88 Adamo racer, but was able to do a work around to hopefully get the exhaust system set. Brought it back from our welder Friday and took pictures in a drizzle. The main design criteria were to have them look as much as possible like the reverse cone megaphones from those first years; work good with the engine set up, state of tune, and the old/repaired Farne head pipes; and be able to meet current race sound restrictions. They were drawn up by a friend who also recently designed a very good working race system for 750 Pantah F1's and TT's to meet similar requirements. Foot pegs and controls were mounted worst case position. These still need a little finishing work, get them coated black, and order the rest of the Supertrapp parts. Definitely also a ways to go on a few other things before we get to hear them.

They are now finally coated black. I was kind of hoping the welders mistake of fitting up the rear cones with the longitudinal seams to the outside would be less visible after coating. Might just be the opposite. We'll know better if we ever make another set.

The visible outside seam looks like it could have been done in italy in '88-89 😉

About the kit pipes, had a chat with Alan Cathcart at the Spa Bikers Classics last year- he has chassis number 7 from the factory still with a few pre production parts- such as these 'kit' type pipes, which he says are way too quiet. It sounds (pun) like the factory revised the design of the pipes just to get them a bit louder still for the 'production' kit bikes : )

with Alan and Supermono expert, Alistair Wager who is restoring the bike for Alan. Great to see him bringing it out for a good blast at Spa : )

Interesting. The right sound must hard to achieve, but you sure know it when you hear it. Rumor has it that Alan has the carburetors that Leoni mounted on my bike for a while. Someday I may attempt to contact him to see if that's true.

Those are still beautiful, even in black. I think I like the bare metal better though. Lovely pieces.

Well I can see where you're coming from re: the weld on your new mega's (obviously they're NOT cans!)
But I think they still look pretty good/even "Period", exhausts back then on race bikes never looked that smart IME... Well apart from the start of the race/season.
During the Bol Dor 24 hour World Championship race in 1980 the Honda I was twirling the spanners for fractured it's 4-1 system in the race, we took it along to the Factory Honda camp in the paddock, who then welded it up for free, it didn't look that pretty (although the welding was perfect) but it did the job and finished the race.
I've a question...
Is that cush drive housing "as it was raced", or have you modified it?
I modify the ones I fit but don't drill as many holes in the ones I use, maybe I'm leaning too much towards reliability and could get away with a few more lightening holes?

Eagle eyes. No, that carrier I modified hasn't been raced yet. I figured those webs could stand some holes, but now I'm picturing it letting go - damn! The change over to Marchesini's was part of our decision to make that bike as competitive (and safe) as possible after the AHRMA Next Gen Superbike class came into being. It was such a mess, so a lot of things have been changed on it. But it will take an engine to pull that thing apart, so I think it's safe.

I raced for several years on a set of Techno's that I modified the sprocket carrier the same exact way. Never any issues.

Very cool! I actually like the exposed metal look opposed to the black myself, but either way they look very nice!

Thanks, and I know what you mean. But with the tri-color paint scheme as a background they'll want to be black.
