Amongst other shed activity dragged the 851 out of the shed today to see if I could get it started. First found the vin on the headstock had been crossed out and a new number with a Japanese character suffix added. That started me worrying about rebirths and registration eligibility here in Australia. The vin for those interested Is zdm851s1850122. Anyway after 20 minutes of terror found the Australian LO1 tag with the original vin which makes it eligible for Australia rego - phew. Now to get I started - fail. I notice there is no cold start assistance or am I missing something else besides mechanical aptitude? The bike will whir away with the fuel pump, turn over on the starter and occasionally fire then stall, the throttle will not catch the idle? Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this or are 851's temperamental like my 900SS of similar vintage which has been consigned to the rear of the shed until further notice! Looks great though 😎

The older ones (till 91?) have no choke.
It may be interesting how long does it stand in the shed, eventually is the gasoline to old?

Yes I thought about that but it has fresh fuel. It will start but then dies straight away. Might just give it a good clean out and a fresh set of plugs and see what happens.

Well if it fired the plugs are working and so are injectors. No sustaining is a problem. What's the history, ie brought it never started, was running before it sat idle etc?

No it ran when I bought it - the owner started it for me when I went to look at it. Sat there and chugged nicely so I am not sure what has happened in between, that's the bit that's giving me the willies! The only things I have found so far is the wire is broken off the rear master cyclinder (no wierd lock outs or something from a circuit break is there?)

Could be injectors are a bit gummed up, they may come good if you get some fuel through them. Could be the battery ( see motoblat post). If you have one fitted try another battery first if you have one. Don't use jumper leads, use another battery.
