I am having trouble with the 851 and would like to seek your advise.
2 weeks ago suddenly in a downhill without throttle the engine stopped, both cylinderts. ...nothing worked...tried with gear in to roll the engine further, no success, so clutch in and stop on the road side.... Then I tried to fired it up again several times....opened the tank...check fuel level, ignition was here, engine starter was working, battery fine but engine did not want to start. There was not even an impression of half start...it is like dead. Then I waited 10-15 mins, and tried again and hop engine fired. So I took on my road again...back home (cautious). Then the engine was working just great.
The same thing occured again 2 times and I eventulally manage to get back home by waiting 10-15 mins every time. Gasoline level looked OK and no reserve light came in. I did 165 km since the last full tank. I sounds to me like gasoline is not coming to the injection...??? No real idea.
any suggestions, where I should start looking,
Thanks in advance,
zofja

Sounds like it could be a bad crankshaftsensor, just had the same thing happening to my old alfa romeo. It gets worse , in the end I could have it running for 5 minutes and had to wait for an hour to start again. Good thing is it's the same sensor on old Fiat unos as on the Ducati, so it's cheap./jimmi

Could be as simple as the vacuum pipe coming out of the top of the tank is kinked or blocked? When you checked the tank did the fuel tap suck in air when you opened it? If its blocked the vacuum stops fuel flow, You stop, open cap, release the cap or wait ten minutes and it runs after the pump brings fuel back to injectors. Then when you start riding a vacuum builds up again in the tank and it stops the engine and back to square 1...

Same happened to mine took awhile to sought out. Same as Jimi851, crank rotation sensor and it does get worse stopping more often.
Good luck.

Tricolour cuting out .....
The ignition relays work themselves loose under the seat hump , sometimes pop right out if you wheelie .....
Gassing uo (aeration) in the fuel was also common .
There was a kit with a swirl pot to stop this , shoulda been fitted years ago tho (you can see it if you look in the tank .
Hope this helps , Steve .

Check relays under seat. I believe one supplies power to the fuel pump and the other supplies power to the ECU. Check that they are seated properly. I had one that would intermittently stop running the fuel pump. Replaced both and no more problems, relays are still available from Ducati.
