kurtflys I need to do a little trouble shooting on my tri color kit bike. My lights don't work and I think I want to put in a sealed battery. Does any know where I can find a shop manual? Were the straight 851's and the Kit versions pretty much the same other than the kit items? Thanks
wgsvintage I believe the earliest shop manual is a 1989, and should be in the manuals section of this forum. Bill
kurtflys ?? manual to sure where to look for that. wgsvintage wroteI believe the earliest shop manual is a 1989, and should be in the manuals section of this forum. Bill
guy851 Tric Kit manuals http://www.ducati851and888.com/showthread.php?1411-Ducati-Manuals Strada's and Kits very much the same with additional manuals covering the race modifications. I posted all years ago and Jimmy has them all neat n tidy now in the files section Guy851
851 tricolore There were manuals for tricolore strada and the kit version. If you have a specific question, please ask, Kurt because I have them both, but it would take a week to scan them in. But as said here the tech is very similar to the 1989 onwards, except for a couple of things: 4 injectors, fuel injector junction block- but anybody can see that. all the best Ian
kurtflys steering tube My steering is way to tight. Does anyone have the parts brake down and the torque setting for the top nut?
wgsvintage You can find the answer to your first question here: For some reason the torque value is not in the book. Should be the same as the Pasos. Would like to know that myself, we're working on it. BillWorkshop-Manual-851-89-90.pdf14.79MB
wgsvintage That is actually an aluminum "bolt" (male threads) into the steel steering stem. Having trouble finding the torque value for lubricated aluminum M20x1.5 threads. Think it may be in the neighborhood of 30 Nm, but still looking. Bill
wgsvintage Here's the best torque info I can get. The head mechanic at New Hampshire's Seacoast Sport Cycle and former head mechanic at BCM says 26Nm. My engineer friend was liking 30Nm. Close enough, so add a some good zinc anti-seize on the threads, and off you go. Bill
851 tricolore sorry I'm a bit slow- lots to do recently. here's what the book says: disconnect the steering damper (maybe check if this is not your problem?) loosen the top nut, loosen the clamp screws each side, loosen the middle clamping screw, turn the adjustment ring under the top yoke (triple tree) to eliminate clearance. tighten all, connect steering damper and exactly which screws they refer to here, I'm not sure: fork screw torque: between 34.3 and 37.3 Nm (3.5 - 3.8 Kgm) steering head screw: 22.6 to 24.5 Nm (2.3 - 2.5 Kgm) steering head screw (again) 34.3 - 37.3 Nm (3.5 - 3.8 Kgm) no loctite mentioned for these parts. even the original Italian uses the same descriptions for different screws, so no help there either. I find this all very vague- and think you can't go wrong, following the more experienced advice from the others here. all the best Ian
wgsvintage No, 34Nm equals about 25 foot/pounds of torque. Check your torque wrench, if that amount is way at the bottom end of its range, it may not be very accurate for that amount, and giving a false feel. 34Nm is about the normal torque for a 10mm bolt, definitely not finger tight. For me anyway. Bill
