I went a lap and a half on this one in my Harris TT before pulling in, then some running in the pits, then another short lap before finally deciding we should probably pull the engine. It was only whispering that something wasn't right. We were quite surprised. Have it on my fireplace mantel now.

Not sure I'd go that far...but anything can break. Bruce Meyers (BCM) who took mine on the final short lap, and actually split the cases, did say "Hoooly Shit!!". But that could have been because it had still ran so good. Mine was a full race engine that had been raced long and hard before I got it. Do you know the history of the one you pictured? I suppose it could have been thoroughly abused before too many miles were put on it.

There's been reports/accounts (possibly on here) of early SP2 or 3's snapping their cranks, I also knew a 888 owner who's crank let go after the alternator nut came lose, the rotor rolled over the woodruff key, split and locked the crank... 😯
Shit happens with high reving tuned motors (and a bog stock 851 is a highly tuned motor compared with what went before), but it's not as far as I've heard a common failure.
When compared with the pressed up needle roller bearing big end cranks fitted to earlier Ducati V Twins, these are F'kin Bullet proof.

In the early 80's whilst working in the pits at a World Endurance Championship race, I actually witnessed a Bevel twin still running even though the horizontal pot had ripped itself away, it was going up and down only the exhaust pipe and carb stopped it from falling off.

Mine is a standard strada 3 from 1989 - and the crank broke last year...

Acutally, I found out because the rotor broke and it wouldn't charge the battery. So first I replaced the rotor etc. without noticing that the crank had broken - only to experience that it died out on the first test run with the new rotor.

Eventually, I had the crank replaced with a 916 crank as it was 1/10 of the price of a 851 crank.. It took some alterations as the stroke is 2mm longer, so now I probably have a "878" rather than a 851 :-)

Pop on some 888 or 916 barrels and 916 pistons you'd have a 916.
There's a few 851/888's that are actually 916cc running around that I know of, at least two of them belonging to forum members.

He's ignored an offer of £200, it's not like there aren't plenty of 916 parts out there is it. 😏
They aren't worth more than £200 FFS!
I bought my Pukka 916SP barrels and pistons for £120 and they're as rare as hens teeth.
