paint job 888 Strada

After driving a season and a couple of thousand miles (almost 70.000 km's now) it's time for a bit of tlc. Got the 888 exactly one year back, this winter she's had 2 new tyres, new chain and sprockets, new oil and filter, new fuel filter and fuel lines, new air filter, fresh coolant, spark plugs, regulator, new brake- and clutch fluid, new brake pads, new fork oil and a completely new clutch.
For 10.000 km's a complete engine rebuild, so now only (major!) valve adjustment and new timing belts.

I hadn't planned a paint job, but because winter lasts a bit longer than expected, I decided nevertheless to do so.
So rims sanded (had to demount the new tyres.....), the bodywork will be done by the expert. I think that'll work out better........ New decals ordered from UK, US and Germany. Next winter I will optimise the looks of the engine, the frame is still quite nice.

That must be a very early 888 as it has the 851 air box and 851 Black covers on the motor?
What does the plaque on the top yoke say?

The plaque says "Foggy"...... Just a gimmick of a previous owner! No holes drilled in the top-yoke to mount the plaque, so I could remove it.
Engine number ends on #000009. One of the first?
Every body- and chassis -part I've studied is marked/stamped "91", so it is an early one. Some panels on the inside are marked by handwriting, mostly somewhere in september '91. I've asked the painter to let these markings untouched!

the first 500 888 had a p7 ecu, maybe they were mostly 851? never seen one, Italy only I believe.

is the engine # zdm888w4 or zdm888w4b?

First parts (the ones that don't need decals) and rims are ready. Tyres mounted (with lots of grease to protect the new paint), now waiting for the right decals and than the last layer of clear coat. Also found a set of full floating Brembo's in the shed, so mounted these on the front. The carrier's of these look way better than the original one's. And maybe it'll brake better?

Does anyone know if the original carriers can be converted into full floaters (so new outer parts and bushes -not sure if the last term is the right one....- and who sells these parts?

Don't mind quality of the pics, better ones will follow asap!

The original non floating discs have steel centres and weigh a lot heavier than the alloy centred full floaters.

+1 You save 1/2 lb (221g) of unsprung weight each rotor.

Finished today! Put all parts back. It's not a SP2, 3, 4, or 5, but I'm very satisfied with this result and enjoyed the first miles of yhis year very very much!!
Also put Dymag wheels in the 748, handles much much better.

Unlike Pompey I think these bikes look a lot better with a single seat SP4/5 unit fitted.

Thanks! wasn't aware of the V-piece, it doesn't have markings about age, only an original Ducati partsnumber. As mentioned, this is possibly one of the very first 888's according to chassis- and engine number but only first registered in 93. And you are right about age, it leaves traces....

The later '94 V piece had a square/oblong shaped cut out to clear the front wheel under heavy braking, earlier V pieces didn't have this cut out.
You don't need a date on the part to spot this difference. 😉

The 888 looks lovely mate.Those silencers......what are they off....? What diameter is the exhaust system . Is it standard.... ? would love a pair of those silencers for our 888 track day bike...any idea where they are available....or if anyone has some for sale ? Thanks.

The cans are original alu Termignoni's. link size is 45 mm, pipes 50 mm. No idea if they are still available somewhere.....
