888 SP4 production numbers

apologies if this is a noob question repeated.
can anyone confirm the number of plain old SP4's produced for EU and confirm whether they were numbered. Were carbon termi's standard?
I have one in my sights and want to be absolutely sure it's genuine and not a ringer.
Ducati have confirmed frame but not engine number.

The SP4 had alloy cans as standard, the SPS aka SP(4)S came with carbon cans.

we're the bikes numbered on the headstock and if so does anyone know how many were made.
I've read 500 SP4 and 100 SPS but am not clear.

Yes number on the headstock.
From 001 to 100 was the SPS like Steve said with carbon tank and carbon mufflers.
And the next 500 where the SP4 so from 101 to 600 then.
Somebody here on the forum can you probebly tell how the frame number has to be.

Do you have a pic of the badge? It's fairly easy to spot a dodgy one. What are the frame and engine numbers?

This is quite in order because the standard SP4 production plaque's included the 101 SPS models.

The SP4 had an alloy tank, alloy hi level silencers, vented clutch cover, and ohlins front and rear suspension as standard.

Its unlikely Ducati would confirm the engine number.

thanks to all for your help.
seller confirmed the original alloy cans are included in the sale and there is the standard vented clutch cover on the bike. I've asked for a picky of the numbered badge.
sorry if I'm being dumb but according to previous mail, 100 sps than 500 sp4s = 600 bikes.
how can there be any more eg 604 and supposedly 605?
bike has 20k miles and a full service history. any thing I can do/should do to try and be sure I'm not buying a money pit? (worn cases and such like)
it doesn't have the 1 number on the side of the fairings so I guess it's been painted.

I cant understand why someone who was creating a fake SP4 would number it 605. Surely you would take a stab at some other number below 600, and hope that no one else jumps in and claims that that's my number....

They didn't, they had the same steel tank as the '92 851 and the '93> 888 Strada's.

I guess it was an easy mistake to make given that after a few glasses of wine your collection of 851 and 888 models would start to merge into a single mass of red... wait until you drink the rum that I have for you, then you will start to really get confused!

In your state of confusion I may try and strike a deal with you, I might be able to pry that beauty from your grip, It would look nice in my living room.

I've never heard of, nor read about, anything other than there were 400 x SP4's made, plus 100 x SP4S's (or 101, depending on who you talk to), so that's 500 made in all. Personally I've also not heard of any with a plaque number over 500, and as there were 500 made in total, how can there be any numbered above that? Not saying I'm right but that's a new one to me. Having said that, the first hundred were alleged to be the SPS variant (the added spec over SP4 is a near Corsa motor, no cooling fans, carbon tank & silencers + a few other alterations), yet some alleged SPS's have since popped up with higher plaque numbers than 100/101 (still under 500 though). Not sure anyone knows the truth? Try Livio Lodi at the factory (museum curator), he's pretty helpful and I'm sure he can shed light on SP4/SP4S plaque numbering.

TBH here and I'm no expert but...
I think that eight8eight aka Johnny "G" is probably correct here from everything that I've gathered/read over the years.
IIRC? There were 100 SPS's but not all of them were numbered in the 1st 100 of the '92 model year SP4's, of which there was only 500 in all made??
