hi guys and girls, just wanted to post up pics of my 5 spoke magnesium marchesini wheels. i had them soda blasted and re zinc di-chromate dipped then primed and painted in diamond mica black (to match my frame) i'm now waiting for titanium bolts to mount my brakes and sprocket before they go on the bike.

Very Nice!!

So nice, so rare !!

Is Marchesini still making those magnesium five spokes or did you find them elsewhere? Either way, that's a very nice piece of kit...😉
loony888
no mate, i don't think so.
they're dated 96 and they were bought from the ducati performance catalogue way back when for a SS.
they were gold originally but were a little tatty and i prefer black!
thanks for the comments guys, i'll post more pics when they're on the bike!!!

hey guys,
well, they're on the bike! finally! i ordered titanium bolts and nuts to attach the rotors and sprocket from the australian poggipolini agent and 11 weeks later i'm still waiting! so out of frustration, and before our dollar took another big hit i ordered what i needed from MOTOWHEELS in the U.S and my package arrived this morning. 4 working days by air mail post, so huge applause to them for great service, and they charged me $25U.S freight too!!!!😄

Looking great mate.

Nope, they stopped making the 900SS-888 wheels a while ago, and even the 916 5-spokes are no longer in production! But Marvic still have their Penta2's.

are you sure marvic are manufacturing those again? gowanlochs here in oz have had NOS sets sitting on the shelf for ages. they still do the piuma and pentaII but they're 5 spoke wheels.

Foggy 888 wroteMarvic have now remade the 3-spoke wheels for older Ducatis 851/888 with the 17mm axles. In fact there is a set of them on eBay right now:

Remade? That's why you can find them on several sources now. 😄
the auction is from kukok, which has listed these wheels here as well.

Yes, I am sure that they are new. I contacted Marvic directly regarding having a new 18" 3-spoke rear wheel made for my TT1, and they responded saying that they are just now remaking the 17" 3-spoke wheels.
The wheels that Gowanolochs had were Corsa spec. and they are now sold out.

oh they definitely look brand new, but marvic remaking wheels to suit a 15 to 20 year old bike? blimey!!!! wonder how many they'll sell?

They are a sand cast wheel, so it's not like they had to do a lot of machine set-up to make them. They probably just made a few sets for customer demand. They are also making copies of the old 7-spoke 18" Morris mag wheels as used on race bikes in the '70s and '80s.
Mr.R
Hi,
A mate of mine who owns a 926cc 136 rwbhp full Corsa spec engined SP(4)S bought a set of 3 spoke Marvics over 10 years ago, he still has them on his bike.
These sand cast wheels were porous and the tyres kept going down/flat, in the end I think he had them coated internally with a rubberised compound, or maybe they were powder coated?
Whatever it was it cured the problem.
Nowadays I tease him about his soon to be scrap expensive wheels, he now whishes that he'd not sold his original 3 spoke alloy Brembo's.
I now own his original SPS 888 barrels and pistons, (I bought the bike that they'd been fitted to) which he now wants to buy from me to return his bike to it's original spec.

why do you say they're soon to be scrap?
all magnesium wheels are porous, that's why they have the zinc di-chromate coating on them, to inhibit moisture being absorbed by the magnesium. when this happens the magnesium becomes brittle and corrodes, which you can see displayed by worm like lines under the paint. as long as the coating is replaced from time to time (or when corrosion starts to appear) they should last indefinitely. the zinc di-chromate won't stop the air escaping though, so he's done something like an extra coating inside as you said to stop that.
as a side note,
when i had the wheels in this thread blasted to remove the old paint and di-chromate coating i had them soda blasted, they came back looking like a typical bare metal wheel. i recently, through a friend organised the coating process for a guy and he had his wheels glass bead blasted, OMFG!!! they looked like polystyrene! they were off a race bike and looked very average with worm lines under the paint, but that blast was way too coarse!! the acid etch dip as part of the coating process removes all traces of corrosion, there's no need to try and blast it away. all i can say is i'm glad i'm not rolling on them!

Magnesium wheels have a shelf life due to fatigue, its got nothing to do with corrosion. Corrosion is just another one of the problems along with the catching fire bit. Aircraft wheels have landings recorded as well as time in use, then they are binned. Some manufactures rate the life of a car mag wheel for racing as low as 18 months. If you buy a second hand set of magnesium wheels you are putting you life on the line, because you have no idea what they have been through. Every change in direction, every bump causes flexing= Fatigue. And when they let go its quick, as I'm led to believe they store shock similarly to zone toughen glass. Yes the new ones are better than the old, but the problems still persist. Its the nature of the material. You have to ask yourself is the wank factor worth it!
from Durrani
Durrani:
"We were not interested in putting out a product with a shelf life… that’s for milk, not motorcycle wheels."
“We wanted to increase the strength and fatigue life of the wheel above and beyond what would be expected. We wanted to beat the standard (Talking about DOT) rather than to just meet it. To compare apples to apples, one could say the very lightest racing wheels out there, in order to get certified to the TUV or JWL standard, would need a lot of additional structural strength from the long-term fatigue standpoint to be a ‘life of the bike’ wheel. You’re not necessarily going to get that long-term strength -at that weight - from magnesium. There’s a price to be paid for that lightness – where do you draw the line? We look forward to having the lightest metal wheels that will carry a ‘life of the bike’ standard. They will not be as light as some of the wheels out there, but they’ll be stronger and more fatigue resistant."
Stated in earlier in the article there are no magnesium wheels that have the TUV standard as yet.

loony888
wank factor? i suppose, you would know, being the expert.....
motorcycles are not aircraft, i know this is a hard concept for you to grasp griff, seeing as you know EVERYTHING about the aircraft industry! but really, corrosion is a problem for all magnesium simply because they're all magnesium, but fatigue will vary due to the stresses applied, i doubt any motorcycle wheel will ever suffer the stress (kilo for kilo) that an aircraft wheel will ever see.
i've seen various magnesium parts like ailerons and other airframe parts reused when they physically look like scrap, and i'm sure the aircraft safety stds are stringent.
i have no idea who durrani is but there's nothing wrong with making a wheel that is durable and caters for a wider market than a specific race wheel manufacturer does, but that doesn't make them right for every application now does it?

You hate me don't you Paul. Don't be afraid to say it.
Durrani is a guy that's designing and making, for mass manufacture eventually the attached rims.
