Howdy Folks!

After the frantic SP3 build and subsequent success at the Classic TT earlier this year, I was pretty knackered and not really up for decisions on plans for 2014.

2 months on and the dust has settled, the leaves are falling, there is a chill in the air and now it gets dark half-way through the day. Winter projects beckon!

Classic TT in 2014? Hell, yeah! I've got an uber-cool bike that works around there... so it would be rude not to. Been thinking of ways to improve the bike. More power and less weight at minimal cost. Contradiction there... but I have a few months now to work on things.

For now, she's parked up out of the way while I do some more power/less weight work on my little Desmo Due monster (still need to do qualification races early in 2014). Been thinking about a few things though...

An area for improvement. She's currently on the standard 'fat' three spokers... pretty darn heavy. Been compiling a list of wheels and their weights from reputed sources (forums! ;-). The only heavier wheels are the Sport Classic 36 steel spokers.

Some OZ Piega's would be the business 😁 - but the cost eye-watering.

On the cheaper side would be some alloy Marchesini 5 spokers... a lot more of those around but weight saving would only be around a kilo for front and a kilo for rear. The 888's 17mm solid spindle is something to get around (and make lighter). Any ideas/tips on this conversion?

I guess the middle ground would be some other older after-market wheels in forged alloy or magnesium.
Any ideas on what's out there?

Rear Brake

The standard item is pretty chunky. Sure there is some weight saving we can do here.

One option is to lighten the brake carrier plate up (maybe drill it) and fit some tiny scooter calliper. The rear brake is only ever used in skrootineering bay.

Another is the Corsa-like under-slung calliper. Looks cool, but not sure it's saving much weight with that long calliper-stay bar (steel rose joints etc.).

Any thoughts ideas and experience in this area is appreciated. 😄

I think the carrozzerias are about the cheapest wheels, but the std cush drive bushes are a bit soft. ask marvin.

at least you have time this year.

That might be the case but they aren't exactly "period" parts are they?

Magnesium wheels are ok. The rules:
1.17 WHEELS
Free choice as many machines of this era will have used magnesium alloy wheels which are subject to metal fatigue over time, in the interests of safety and availability, modern wheels that closely resemble what was used on the bike in the period may be used.
Free choice of size.

I think Carbon wheels are a no-no, even in the modern classes (TT and MGP).

I dropped Nat a PM a few days ago regards the Marvics.

You can still buy new "period" 3 spoke Marvic's, Astralights and possibly 3 spoke Dymags. All of these were used on race 851/888's back in the day.
I think Carbon wheels are banned from racing anywhere full stop??
I've got 5 spoke alloy Marchesini's on my '92 851/916 bike, the front is around 1kg lighter than the OEM 3 spoke Brembo but the rear although lighter is nowhere near that much lighter, the difference is around the weight of the OEM rear disc.

17mm hollow axles are about. I think super lights had them as thats what my front end came off. Rear is hollow off 90 biposto.
