I do know that there is a difference though. One is small end located, the other is large end located. Not an insurmountable problem.
From what Ive read, the 888 is big end located and the 996 small end located. Id just have to clearance the center gap of the wristpin bore on the 996 pistons a bit, correct?
also, everything Ive found regarding rod length seem to indicate that all the desmoquattros used the same length rods, but some had 20mm wristpins while others had 21mm. At least that I can measure without disturbing rod bolts.
