dudlington wroteI have recently bought a race Ducati 888 with this German paperwork which I am trying to get registered (Please see attachment).
There are a few things that I cannot identify .
1.The type is ZDM8882(Box 3).
2. Chassis number TP54093701(Box 4)
I am also abit confused as the power of 88Kw/9000 (120 Hp) (Box 7) on the official German registration document which does not match with any power figures for any model I can find.
It mentions only 1 seat(Box 12).
Empty weight is 215 Kg (Box 14).
Top speed is 250 Km/h(Box 6).
Date of first registration is 05.07.93(Box 32)
The previous owner has painted the frame black however it was white in colour when he started his race build.
Can anyone help ?.
It would be very helpful if you posted pictures - German text written to register the bike may not be accurate. Your bike could be factory produced race bike- or it could be a race bike made from a street bike- pictures would help us figure this out.
But I will take a crack- Since the frame was white and the motor is an 888 then it would have been a race bike manufactured from '90-'92-- although a few white Corse frame bikes were made for customers in '93.
Also-because the "frame" number contains an 888 then it would have been made after '89
I do not read German so I seem to feel that the text is giving us mixed messages about this being either a street bike or a factory race bike-- the tire designation seems to be street tires as well as the exhaust designation- and the weight is way too high. On the other hand the hp is in the ball park for an 888 Corse hp at the rear wheel. Also it appears that manufacturer's number was incorrectly entered on the original registration and then was corrected to read 4042-- which is outside the range of numbers I have for any Corse or SP bike from '90-'92
Box 1. This is really your frame number and you should be able to find it stamped to the right side of the steering head. Use a LED flashlight and shine it down the right air intake horn and you should see it on the steering head.
If your bike was bought from the factory then its frame number should be no higher then 1780 and look like this ZDM*888S*00000-- with your number in place of the zeros.
Box 2. The frame number above is your chassis number-- I have not seen a TP number on a frame.
Your other questions:
The 120 hp (listed spec is 128 hp) could be the rear wheel hp of an 888 motor. The street motors were 77 hp - 94 hp at the crank for the 851 and the SP
All of the race bikes had mono seats- but so did SP road bikes.
215 kg is 474 pounds which sounds more like a street bike weight. It could be the entire shipping weight of the bike/crate plus any spares bought with the bike-- like a spare motor but not sure why the German paperwork from 2004 would list it this way.
250 km/h is about 156 mph which seems correct for a Customer 888 bike.
"Customer Racing" bikes came with 3.5" front wheels and 5.5" rear wheel (same as the street bikes but street bikes were aluminum and race bikes were magnesium). Most factory "Works" bikes came with 3.75" fronts and 6" rears.
Michelin street tires were designated 120/70 ZR 17T x 11 TL and 180/55 ZR 17T x 11 TL and the slicks that came with the race bikes were designated S 1016 and S 1423. I am not sure on the paperwork what the rear 180/55ZR17Tx23TL is unless that was a 2004 tire. But in any case it appears these are street tires.
Being German they noted that this bike had front braided brake hoses manufactured by Spiegler. Again the factory hoses were already braided (not Spiegler) so I am not sure why this was noted unless they were noting down TUV approved hoses on the bike.
From this sparse information I am not sure if you have a factory manufactured race bike or one that someone made using a street bike. It is possible that the German paperwork is a wrong- wish only makes things more confusing.
