888 strada SP seat conversion

Hi, Sorry to bring up old subjects. I have spent many hours flicking through posts on 888 strada to SP seat conversion and was wondering, advice on which aftermarket GRP seat unit was best QB carbons version impregnated red @ £175 or the german one @ £100. I have a quality painter at hand to carry the details but wondered if anyone had experienced either of them.

Hi Si,

The QB kit's better quality IME, in fact it's good enough (if you're not to anal) to actually fit without painting.
I run a (painted) full QB Carbon body kit on my bike and have a GRP one tucked away as a spare.
The German kit is cheaper and it shows in the quality, but if it's going to be painted ?
You pays your money and makes your choice...This kit will need a fair bit more prep' to make the finished job look good.

I've just bought the impregnated QB seat and you can see and feel the join in the middle. As I'm spraying all my panels I have got rid of the join, filled and painted it. I was in the same boat as you and opted for the QB to save all that.

I'm looking as well with no luck, think mine will be high density race pad foam rubber until (a) someone knows of a supplier (b) I get my bum in gear and have some made.

Rear seat units from Ricambi Weiss in Germany are sort of the right shape as the race seat units, they have the section behind the bum pad location shaped to attach to the mono subframe.

The seat units from QB carbon that I have seen are flat and do not have the shape for locating onto mono subframes.

If updating the late seat unit onto an early subframe then these did not have the mountings at the bum pad area, instead it was fixed on the sides further back. The late shape seat units do not have the rear recess for locating onto early subframes.

If using the steel subframe from a biposta then these also would not have had the seat locating mounts behind the bum pad.

So to recap if you have a post 1992 mono subframe then use the Ricambi Weis seat unit, which should be mounted in four points, use of the QB unit will mean location only at two points being at the front just below the tank.

I believe that Ricambi Weiss also do the early type of mono seat that will fit early alloy mono subframes.

If it helps I bought Ricambi bodykit for my Bimota db2. Very impressed with quality of material and mould accuracy.

For the late shaped '92 onwards seat and subframes...
I made up two small alloy "L" shaped brackets that fix into the OEM alloy SP mono rear mounting points, to these I fitted Dzus females, then drilled two holes in the QB seat to accept the male Dzus fasteners.
The QB seat unit is now mounted at 4 points and takes less than 10 sec's to remove*...Easy peasy. 😉
If using a converted Bip'/Strada steel subframe you can just weld on two brackets to do this mod.
Been there and done that one as well.

*When using Dzus fasteners on the front fixings as well.

Steve, I have fitted both front and rear subframes to the bike and very good they are too. My problem that has been mentioned is the QB seat unit has only two front fixings. I am now looking at fabricating a bracket from the top supports to the seat unit where the bump stop fits. Anybody sorted this one?

On the beach...My hearts pumping purple piss for you mate. 😁 I'd be seriously gutted but...
Today it's cracking the flags down 'ere in Cornwall and I've just returned from a lunch time stroll to the pub in the next village with one of my sons.
Beach in Spain or beautiful stroll through the English/Cornish countryside, smack bang in between Bodmin and Dartmoor in the sunshine??
Sorry mate you've lost it's the Cornish greenery and lifestyle for me.

He spent last weekend with me and my family, he's "Uncle" Steve Bailey to my little girls.
As long as he doesn't go into re-building, tuning or overhauling heads/motors for 851/888's, I won't start making parts for them.
I've got the heads from his 888 Strada waiting in the queue. 😁

I do miss the green stuff but we are looking for a holiday home in South Wales. I was out yesterday on the 1098 scrubbing tyres in up the mountain roads here in 40deg heat, not healthy.

Regarding the 888, any chance of a photo of your set up? I have decals from Image Works arriving Saturday so it won't be long before it's back on the road and shall I put my 888 heads in the post? Although, the bikes fast enough and a blast to ride here as it is.

Thanks for all the info chaps, very helpfull. I have a QB seat been delivered tomorrow. Before been sent away for painting I will assess best method of action. My strada is a standard 92, so steel frame. I understand my seat unit will have only 2 front fixing points, so will have to manufactures fixing brackets of some sort. I may have to go down the alloy sub frame route. Steve I may have to purchase one of yours......

The Ricambi seat worked for me...couple of brackets.Used the original Strada seat pad...weight on the frame.

Thks for the images Michael, I think I will do similar to you. I like the idea of putting seat weight on the frame.

I spent most of the day saturating 5sq metres of carbon fibre with epoxy resin before vacuum bagging the lot in a mould for a few hours...much later when I split the mould this popped out! I still need to trim it though, that's one of tomorrows tasks, it weighs approx 1.1kgs.
