My 888 on the Dyno

My 93 888 Strada with SP cans and K&N air filter and single seat, other than that its pretty std.

Here it is being run on the Dyno.. made 94 bhp at the rear wheel

And a photo after I'd had the bodywork repaired, had a slow speed fall when a kid opened a car door righ in front of me, car and kid didnt hang around to see the damage.

Welcome to the forum. Did you have the dyno guys tweek or check on chip? 94 seems a tad low although if its nice and linear its enough!

No they didnt do anything to the bike, my mate owns the Dyno shop and they wanted a few different bikes to film. I was thinking about fitting a PC3, but it seems they dont list one for a 888 anymore. The power is ok for me, I was looking for a smoother low end, as its hard work at slow speeds around town.

By the looks of your graph you've got the power hanging on from about 8500-10000 without falling off. Very nice. I'm jealous as I know a guy with a dyno but I've been waiting for a year now...he's a dick. Too bad cuz I've got a stack of chips from Brad as well as different exhaust configs.

Correct when I used a PC3 usb it was originally intended for a 916.
...and 15/40 or 15/41 works well throughout the rev range, they're waaay over geared as standard.

Thats useful to know about the 916 PC3 fitting an 888, and I do intend modifying the gearing when it needs a new chain. Though I need to finish a couple of other projects before even thinking about spending anymore money on the 888.

You can now get the chip on the bike tuned to your bike on the dyno, so no need for the PC3.

Yes that's why I no longer use a PC3*, but not everybody lives close enough to somewhere that can make a chip/map.
We're lucky in the South West in Having CJS up near Bristol. I went there but it was still a close to 300 miles round trip and I had to be there for 8 am.
TBH if I lived anywhere else in the UK I'd still take it to Chris at CJS**, I'd just book a B+B in a local pub.

*However the good thing about a PC3 usb is you can plug it into your laptop and tweak the fueling yourself, if you were to make further changes.
Even I can do that and I'm a complete computer numpty!

**I've used three different places to map my bikes on the Dyno, all of them came highly recommended, but the best result was from CJS.

So when they change the EPROM chip or whatever, what does that involve? I assume its not as simple as changing a SIM card in my mobile ?

I'd probably still go for a PC3 as I could get it at near cost price and get the dyno time for free, though I'd have to wait till winter when its quieter at my mates workshop.

Before I put the bike on the Dyno I asked on the Ducatisti forum what bhp I should expect, the concensus was anything over 85bhp at the rear wheel was good, I was happy to get 94. Would I really get over a hundred with a chip or PC3?

I have had 5 stradas and 2 sp's. All of my strada's had between 100 and 104 bhp at the rear wheel. 85 would be very low in my experience. The advantage they had was such a linear delivery and strong torque so I have never gone to great lengths to improve outright bhp.

Pompy's right here a well set up 888 with open cans and a free flowing air filter should kick out around 100 rwbhp.

When Chris at CJS maps your bike he creates a whole new chip, it isn't just dropping in another one/chip, he actually creates a whole new map that's then burnt into a chip.
As I've said/posted before it's money well spent IMHO and experience.

Looks bang on with 94rwbhp with most spec sites quoting around 104 hp @ 9000 rpm* (rear tyre* 95.4 hp @ 8900 rpm ). One day i will get mine over to Chris (not as if it's far! ) and get the old girl checked and re chipped.

I've taken the plunge and ordered a PC3 for a 916 (hope it fits!). It'll be a couple of weeks before it arives, then I need to book the bike in to have it fitted and mapped. My 888 is due for an MOT and service at the end of May so I'll get it all done at the same time.

Oh I gave up the world of work a couple of years ago, so if its sunny I go out on the bikes anytime I like... beats sitting in front of a terminal all day long. Actually, I wasnt going to spend anything on the 888 just yet, as I've got a couple of projects on the go at the moment.. a Guzzi and a Norton/Harley Ironhead cafe racer, which is sucking up all my spare cash. I'm learning how to lace wheels this week.. its a lot harder than it looks !

thats good, happy bike retirement! It is great building specials, they get more respect these days I think.
