Here's my 1991 851 I'm rebuilding. After finding cracks in the crankcase where they attach to the frame, I decided to purchase a motor from a 2000 ST4. I got the complete motor w/ECU wiring harness, controls and gauges. I decided to paint my frame black. Since it wasn't going to be an 851 anymore, I figured a few small changes would confuse those who think they know what's underneath. My next conundrum is a custom airbox and modifying the FBF carbon cans from the 851 to fit the ST4 collector.

I got a lot of work done on this in May before I went on tour. It's mounted and wired. I need to get my exhaust (ST4) to Marvin to get it modified to fit the 851 swingarm. I mounted the ST4 gauges and handlebar controls. I also added a voltmeter to the gauges. I built some LED boards to replace the brake and turn bulbs. Tried to mount 900SS Helibars, but I couldn't get them to play fair with the fairing. I need to find a set of ST4 mufflers. I want to cut off the lower portion that mounts to the collector and weld them to my FbF carbon cans that came with the 851. Unless I can find a shop to fab the whole thing for me at a reasonable price.

Update

Still futzing with the exhaust. I took a hammer to it and made it fit, it looks a bit ugly though. I figured out what needs to be done. When I can get a set of damaged ST2/3/4 cans I will take the whole thing to a local welder who I think can do the work. Anybody know where I could find a set of damaged ST2/3/4 cans cheap? I got the ST4 airbox mounted. I ended up cutting the diagonal crossmember. Then I cut off the very front of the ST4 airbox, and using my new plastic welder, attached a portion of a 5 gallon bucket, which was the only piece of flat black ABS I had in the shop. It looks pretty good if I do say so. I'll post more pictures soon. The only thing keeping me from firing it up is this exhaust thing. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Chris,
Sorry I couldn't get to your exhaust, still swamped!
You might consider making that cross member removable as it does stiffen the frame up quite a bit. Some of the Corse frames have a removable crossmember. I can post a pic if you want me to.

Wow, almost 2 years since the last update. A little back story. I had set a budget to do this rebuild within. As the fall of 07 approached, I started running out of money and decided to put the almost finished project on the back burner for a while. Jump to January 08 and I found a 98 Honda Superhawk racebike for a steal. So the money I was saving to finish the 851 was spent on the Superhawk. I spent the next 18 months rebuilding and re-rebuilding that project. I got it where I wanted it (like a 130hp monster copy) and turned my attention back to the Duc.

Today it fired up for the first time since I got it. I've spent the last few days installing the 851 pressure regulator beside the ST4 intake. Then I installed the battery and started testing. Of course the fuel pump was stuck. After exploring my options, I decided to open up the pump, clean it and recrimp the end of the pump. To my surprise, it spun up when I tested it. I went to the local Ducati shop in Charlotte and picked up the the screen that goes on the bottom of the pump. I removed the clamps that held the original fuel filter. This gave me lots of room to fit the newer NAPA (thanx Marvin) fuel filter and the original degasser, but I really cut down on the fuel lines. Both the filter and the degasser are in almost the shortest possible paths. I only used 14 inches of 5/16" line total. Reassembled and dry tested. Filled with gas, turned the key and got the priming sound. It took 15 or 20 tries, but it finally fired up. I assume there was varnish or some other crap in the injectors. I let it run for 5-10 minutes at a time, and it kept running better and better. By mid afternoon it was idling smoothly, most of the time, with a few pops and burps here and there.

I plan a service day soon. Belts, valves, TPS, etc. I need to identify the chip in the current 16M ECU. Looks like it says "072U". I'll attach a picture. I'm still trying to decide on whether to get the "right" chip for this ECU or a supplemental black box or a My16M ECU. I'm open to suggestion on this.

given it has ST4 on it and a U i'd say it's a std US spec ST4 eprom.
