fuel stop cock

to get to fuel tap on the 900 ss you need to remove seat and lift tank, so not really designed to be turned off after rides, but if not using bike for a month or so at a time would it be neccessary to close? thanks.

Although i'm too lazy to do it, that is an excellent idea if you have any doubt about your float bowl needle valves ability to remain sealed if left for a while. There have been many stories of people discovering that their sump contents have been diluted with fuel due to above.

You can still access the stop valve with the tank down. At least on my SP I can.

I had to read post twice MJP, but 36 coupe is referring to a carb 900SS I think?

No you can't get to the stop cock without lifting the seat and tank on a carb 900 SS. A pain in the arse, but I do it after each ride as I don't ride every couple of days.

Ever since one of my 900's leaked fuel into the cylinder years ago I have since fitted every carb ducati that I own(ed) with a fuel shut-off. I was lucky enough to know enough to get the fuel out of the cylinder prior to starting as that would have resulted in some broken bits. I've had needle/seat leaks as well as the floats sticking. I use an inline shut-off, they are pretty common and cheap insurance. And, since I keep my bikes inside it's mandatory. I shut off the fuel after each ride as well as when parked somewhere (that way if someone steals my bike I'll find them down the road... that and the reverse shift pattern helps). Here are some pics. Easy to install between the "Y" and the carbs. Another advantage is you can shut off the fuel and you won't burn out your fuel pump when you turn on the bike (like if you used the shut-off under the tank) because it's connected AFTER the "Y" which will allow fuel to run back through the return line to the tank.

Apologies if I mis-read the post.
I unserstood this to be the fuel petcock which is located on the rear underside of the tank.
If this is what we are talking about, I can get to this with my fingers, and I rotate the knob closed after every ride.

ok thanks for replys, but with an electric pump only fuel from the pipe and not the tank would drain if float valve leaking obviously not ideal but the whole tank can not drain? will fit a more accesable cut off as shown above.

you would think so but whilst I can't speak for all derivatives, there is not an effective one-way valve contained within the pump as far as I know and so fuel will continue to drain via the pump. Have you ever dropped one? sadly I have - twice and with ignition turned off fuel will continue to flood from carbs until bike is 'righted' or thumbscrew turned off.

ok thanks turned off under tank to be safe, prob leave as that being only will use every couple months.
