Posting here just in case someone is looking for an unmpolested example...
I had the same issue with my kickstand on an older SS. I had disabled the retractable mechanism, and then forgot to put it up when I started rolling down the driveway. At the end of the driveway I turned left (just barely rolling), and the kickstand cought a hole in the cement. there was enough force put on the bracket that it cracked the case. A very expensive repair as the cases could not be repaired, and they had to be replaced. total nightmare. Without an electronic mechanism as on later models to stop the motor when the kickstand is down, I think it's better to leave the retractor spring in. At least for me since I can be a little absent minded. You're very lucky that you were able to repair the case.
