For a soft clutch ......

I decided to sell my bike, but unfortunally nobody want it, so may be it will have to remain with me for another time. I'm not yet able tu use the clutch.....it is too hard.
Somebody knows how can i change my clutch in a more soft one ?

Someone says that the Ducati's clutch is a good trainer for a virile handshake. I don't know way to decrease the clutch lever hardness unless it starts to slip (reducing the strength of the spring on the clutch plate). You could try to change the diameter of the pump, but in this case you lose the correct stroke of the lever itself.

Hard clutch on an 851, get yourself some time with a bevel cable clutch and be able to crush walnuts with your left hand, piece of cake.
Seriously the after market clutch slave cylinders with the larger piston are great. The lever is easier to operate, but the clutch takes up very quickly compared with an original. It doesn't take long to get use to. I like the MPL tuning parts ones myself.
If you do lighten your clutch springs, you run the risk of clutch slippage.

Hi,
I'm with Griff on this one, the MPL unit works great.
A few guys here in the UK use only 4 springs and report that they've had no problems with clutch slip.
I've not tried this myself as I'm a long time bevel owner.

Yes it will fit the tricolour. All desmoquattro cases are basically the same, Just a series of developments. The slave cylinder comes with a little extension for the older models like ours.
My self and phill911 got ours on ebay. You should see if they still sell them that way, as you can get lucky as we did, and pick one up really cheap.

Hi Griff,
I'm not so sure that they will fit the Tricolore Strada, weren't the early motors based on the Pantah crankcases which had the slave cylinder on the righthand side of the motor.

Steve, Your absolutely right there. Just checked the Kit manual, and they do have the Pantah style clutch. Should have checked first before leaping in. I do that sometimes.
Sorry about that Ironhorse. No Slave cylinder for you. You do have options I seem to recall, Ill ask Bob he's a Pantah whip.

Right it seems that you need to do some major stuff. You could lighten the springs first, but you run the risk of clutch slippage. So the other alternative is to increase the surface area of the slave cylinder piston in the clutch cover. This means a trip to the machine shop. You need them to bore it out a little bit, then cut a new groove for a seal and then make up a new piston and find a seal for it. Its a fair bit of mucking about, and once done you can never go back, but not impossible. Bob has done it once for a race bike project based on a Pantah.
Sorry there are no quick easy solutions as with later models.

i don't understand why you just don't pull some springs out and try that. it works on mine and numerous other bikes - 748, 900ss, s4 - we've done it on.

if it does slip you're better off loading the std springs a little more than going "heavy duty", as you need to increase the seat pressure, not the pressure at full compression. std 4v springs are shorter and higher rate than the 2v springs, so maybe try some 2v springs. once the spring is compressed it's all about the rate, so for the same seat pressure (preload x rate) the lighter springs will always give a softer lever.

or you could get some thin 1.5mm flat steel plates - i think surflex packs have them - and fit an extra friction plate. that'll up the clutch capacity a fair %, even with softer springs.

or, if you want to get really carried away, fit 1.84 ratio primary drive gears from a '98 to '00 model bike. that'll speed the clutch up and reduce the torque it has to deal with, hence reducing the chance of slipping for any given spring package.

lots of options, some really cheap.

I just stumbled upon this older thread as I am investigating the possibility of backdating my later Lh side actuated clutch to the pre '89 pantah style RH side actuated clutch. Just for looks as I want to create a Lucchinelli Replica replica which came with the Tricolore/Pantah style clutch.
I've read the original post this thread started with and discovered it was about needing a heavy hand to operate this Pantah style clutch. At the moment my MPL equipped 1989 Strada clutch works fine and works with very reasonable hand pressure. If I understand correctly this might not improve when I fit a Pantah clutch.
is the question of Pierpaolo about his heavy clutch typical for Tricolores?
