Well today I was swapping the forks legs over in my 851/916.
I've got hold of some K-tech modified legs (at a very fair price) from a 900SL, the spec sheet with them showed the springing to be spot on for my bike...
While I was at it I thought I'd re-grease the headrace bearings which have been in there for around 5 years, I was more than surprised to find the lower cup completely F'cked, all the salt etc thrown at them when using the bike all year round had seen them off "BIG STYLE", but I couldn't feel any play in the forks.
Anyway I remembered this thread*, but before buying them on-line I checked my stock and lucky for me found some new SKF 639174's, they're the same bearings as fitted to the old Bevel 900SS's.

I can't remember them costing anywhere near £50 and checking out this link they seem to be priced at £19.99 a pair???

*The SKF's are unsealed and I quite like the idea of the sealed ones in Steve B's aka duc904red link, I'll get some and put them away for next time.

Yes sorry must have read that wrong as what i got was 4 head bearings
so have 2 going for grabs if anyone wants a set 851 head bearings plus dust seals?

Having got to the wheels i found the wheel bearings also shot but the same
site seems to cater for these too.

Just got to get them pressed out now......

851 tho with rebuilt Showas up front and a new rebuilt+ spring Ohlin
on the back should go as Ducati designed it too.

Nige,
You don't need to press the wheel bearings out.
If you look through the middle of the bearings you'll see a small slot that you use a long thin punch from the other side to knock out the 1st bearing, then it's an easier job to knock out the 2nd.
If you stand the wheel in front of some heat like a hot air blower they'll punch out easier.

Thanks Steve for the info.

They did exactly what you said and tapped out with a punch no problem
surprised how badly worn they were for a bike with 17K miles guess these
need changing every 10K miles or so.

Reviving this thread as I need steering head bearings for my ’91 851. I’ve yet to take the steering head apart. I’m guessing they are standard ball bearings?

I was wondering if anyone upgraded if it’s an upgrade to roller bearings?

From whom did you order either direct replacements or roller bearings?

The headraces are OEM Tapper roller bearings. I usuyally get mine from Simply Bearings in the UK.

All Balls has the bearings. They go out often. They usually go gradualy so you don’t really notice it until the bike seems to wander badly. New bearings really do change things!
