ST4S/851 Mongrel
Well the hybrid ST4S/851 title had already been used! Idea here is to use the parts I have taken from my '92 851 Strada after making the Fogarty rep, a ST4 frame and swingarm I have and a 996 ST4S engine. Concept is to make a ST framed replica of the '92 851 Strada as close to the standard as possible while lurking beneath a 996 engine sort of wolf in sheeps clothing and all that (keeping with the canine theme here). I have A LOT of the strada parts - that I was going to sell until I came up with this (Sorry Mick) I have removed from the Fogarty rep and will have even more after I fit the carbon x runners, corse dash and a few other bits!
I know a lot of you have transplanted the 916/996 or even the 998 engine into the 851/888 frame but this takes the concept a bit further as I said borne of the fact that I had (nearly) all the parts needed to hand. A few have done the same (or attempted) have tried contacting docandy & Imola but they both seem to have left the forum.
Sort of makes sense to me to use the ST4 frame with the ST4S engine (instead of a 851 one) as it means that I cam mount all the engine peripherals electrics/injection system/cooling system,etc on to it.
The frame will then be modified to accept both the 851 front and rear subframes front won't be to much hassle but rear will need quite a bit of cutting/welding of the ST frame see the pic of how Imola did it plan to do it slightly differently by not modifying the rear triangle' and instead making the front mounting points of the rear subframe fit the existing shape of the frame. The rear mount looks like it will match up with the termination of the rear triangle' section of the frame. A cross brace will need to be added at this point ala 851 frame were the shock linkage mounts.
By using the 851 subframes it then means that most of the 851 bodywork /seat unit/clocks etc should fit (with the addition of a few lugs on the frame) to look as much as possible like a '92 strada want it to look as standard as possible (no termi's here). Will be using the 851 showas up front as well as the yokes (will have to source head bearing to get these to fit the (wider) ST headstock).
ST4(S) parts to be used;
Frame, shock, swingarm, engine, loom and electrics, handlebar controls, injectors, airbox, 5.9 ecu, radiator, oil cooler, rev counter
851;
Wheels, forks, brakes, yokes, clipons, dash, front and rear subframes, lights, tank, coolant/oil header/breather tanks, all bodywork panels, front/rear mudguards, infact everthing in the pic below!
Have sourced a ST4S engine, plus hopefully most of the parts needed for it (thanks Stafford) so let the build commence!
Cheers
Johnny
