Engine cases had bearings and seals remove then blasted and coated with KG coating. New bearing went into the freezer and cases into the oven at 325 to cure the coating, after a hour the cases were removed from the oven and the new bearings installed. Ready for the crank and trans.

Who did you use? Also, what method did you use on the cases to keep your gasket surfaces clean?

The powder coating was done by www.rickspowdercoating.com/ .
I did the cases with KG coating. The coating is extremly thin, doesn't retain heat and is chemical resistant, gas, brake fluid, or even paint stipper won't remove it. It's a baked on coating that is applied it to the heated part (120 degrees) with a air brush and then baked for a hour to cure. Before I baked the cases I cleaned the excess coating off the gasket surfaces with lacquer thinner.

Update

Well we had a problem with one of the rods, had to have it reworked. Only good thing about it is we can now adjust the big end clearance with the bearings Marvin supplied me. What is the optimal big end clearance? The manual states .0009 to .0022, .0009 seems real tight. We were trying for .0020 but ended with .0018.
Hopefully I can start reasembling the lower end next week. I still need to send the jugs to have them bored for new pistons and decked, if needed to get 1mm squish.

.oo18 should be Ok. Just take it a "little" easy for a few hundred miles. I wouldn't baby it but don't rev the hell out of it.
You can set the squish with different thickness base gaskets.
I have a thick aluminum plate drilled for the bolt pattern, center drilled to measure with a depth mic to check the squish if you need it. A friend at Myers ducati in Asheville has it but can get it back. With flat top pistons works great, much easier than doing the clay or solder "thing"!

Here are some pics of a caliper I recoated. Blasted with aluminum oxide, except for the inside of the caliper's cylinders and all mating areas. The calipers had some sort of teflon coating under the paint and on the inside.

I see that your crank has 12 splines and not six. I have heard that it was changed from 6 to 12 aroung1991:ish. I am thinking about upgrading my 851 engine to 944. I just need to know what crank I need. May I ask what you engine number you have just like a reference. If my engine has a higher engine number then your mine must have a 12 splinc crank too.
