Starting work on 888S*000782

Foggy 888

All of the 851/888 frames were MIG welded. Even the factory 851/888 Ducari factory team works bikes frames were MIG welded. It wasn't until the 916 came out that they started TIG welding the Ducati factory works bikes. The customer 916 racebikes were TIG welded.

Here is the frame on an 888 factory works bike, notice the welds look like they came out of a caulk gun, these are MIG welds.

Here are the welds on two factory team works 916 racebikes. Notice the smooth fillets where the tubes are joined. These frames are TIG welded. For some reason the paint color on the factory works bike is more of a tan/brown color with no metallic, while the customer race bikes and the production streetbike frames are a painted bronze metallic.

Got it...... all the 851/888's got fat caulk tube welds = MIG.

916's forward got slim low lying penetrating welds = TIG.

So the remaining Q is which 851/888 frames were plain steet and which were CroMo.

I'd like to think Ducati did CroMo on the entire 851/888 line.....but I wonder.

Anyone really know ?

That is sort of the history. In 1999 Ducati switched to Pierobon frames for the factory WSB team bikes, and for some reason these had TIG welded frames. The 1999 Ducati AMA Works bikes used by Bostrom and Gobert were still made by Verlicchi and had TIG welded frames. Ducati used the MIG welded Pierobon frames again in 2000 on the works bikes before switching back to TIG welded Verlicchi frames in 2001.
All of the 999 works bikes and Desmosedici race bikes used TIG welded frame as well.

The only customer racebike that was sold by Ducati that had a TIG welded frame was the Supermono. Perhaps this is because there was no Supermono streetbike, so each one had to be hand built, rather than just using an 888/916 streetbike frame jig and MIG welding a different Corse type chassis on it.

Just looked at the D16 strada...... it's TIG.

Exaclty Tone........now we know the visual difference between TIG vs MIG welded..... which 851/888 frames were plain steet and which were CroMo ?

I'd always thought they were all CroMo because I read it somewhere.....but that dosen't make it so as there's so much mis-information out there.

Anyone ?
