Since September 07 I have been in the process of converting a 1991 851 Strada to a race bike.
The plan is to race it in AFM Super Dinosaur class, I've even got the AFM#851plate for this year.
I need some advice on EPROM's as this is my first 851/888 series Duc.
No internal engine mods, but a full 50 mm spagetti exhaust (Sil Motor courtesy of Stefan), open top airbox, Nichols flywheel & crankcase breather, and lightweight slipper clutch.
Currently the EPROM is a Ducati851S3 009, I'm interested in recomendations from your expieriences.
Thanks,
Brian

3 years ago I raced my '92 Strada in the Canadian Vintage Formula 1 (and won the Championship by the way).
Here's what I did;
Termi slip-ons
Feracci chip (very safe 10,000rpm limit-stock con rods!)
No air-box lid
K&N air filter
Mild porting
Removed all the electric start componants (good for 12 pounds)
Smaller, lighter battery.
Race bodywork
Ohlins steering damper
Ohlins shock
Ferrodo brake pads
EBC front discs
No internal engine mods.
Result: 102 hp on the Dyno
384 lbs
Hope this is of some use. Good luck with your racing, I had a blast with mine!

Ken,
Thanks for the input, do you remember the Ferracci EPROM #? right now they list a Stage 1 chip. I have been leaning toward a Ferracci chip as I have had good results with them in my other Duc's.
Thanks,
Brian

I do believe it was a Stage 1. It was the smoothest power delivery, good power and had the safe rpm limit I wanted. To confirm this will take a few days. It's still in my bike, which is in storage right now (off site, a bit of a trip from here) while I rebuild my engine.
I'll try to confirm within a week.
Ken.

Thanks Ken.
Do you, or anyone else for that matter, Know of a source for a steering damper kit?
Thanks,
Brian

I just last year put an Ohlins damper on a 04 1000SS that I raced in Thunder. It was the same as the one I used on my 851, but they won't list it as a 851 or even SS kit anymore.
What I had to do was order a kit for a Monster, plus the fork-leg clamp for my diameter tube. Simple as that. It isn't cheap, and there may be another alternative brand kit along the same lines, but I know this works. I still have the kit number in the SS file if your local supplier can't find it. (any number of U.S wholesalers should be able to order it).
Ken.

If anyone needs a backup copy of your eproms I can help, Jimmy

Ken,
I've looked at a couple of sites that list kits for Monsters 620/900/1000 and a different kit for S4R models. I assume the one I need is for the 620/900/100 models?

Hi Ken,
What's "Mild porting"?
Thanks

Yup. Then order the fork tube clamp (52mm?) and you're all set.
Matt: I cleaned off blatant casting flaws, polished the exhaust, polished the combustion chambers, bead-blasted the intakes, matched the ports to the gaskets/intake manifold/exhaust flange dimensions. I don't have a flow bench, just went with past racing/drag racing experiance.

Hi Brian
Do you have a few pics of that spaghetti-system ? weldings, bends ..
Did you buy it brand new from Stefan Neubauer in Germany ?
I'm interested to hear about it because I'm looking for a 50mm system to fit my 926 engine and this could be the one. Sefan is selling these for 1699,-Euros

Good man that Stefan, I have many dealings with him. he gets his hands on some good stuff.

I agree, he's a nice person and a good contact. 😄
I have a few deals with him as well, some for my 900SL and some my 851.
The 926ccm engine is in fact bought from him.
Btw.
I've heard that Sil Motor recently made a bunch of complete 50mm spaghetti systems for the 851/888, which all vent to the US.
Is there any of you, stated in the US that can confirm this rumour ? 😳
If confirmed, what is the price in the US then ? (and where, for that matter)

Hi thomas,
Yes, there was a group buy here in the US. I don't know if everyone that bought them used them or not. There were a couple of them up for sale a while ago, don't know if they still are or not. Scottie was trying to sell his some time ago, you might post in the classified ,WTB, for a set.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry, I've been away from the computer lately. For the past four days I've been working on the 851, day and night.
I plan to post up some photos soon.
Yes, the Sil Motor system from Stefan is new. I must say it is a very nice piece of workmanship, although quite expensive due to the Euro/Dollar exchange rate. I will post some photos of it, although it is mounted on the bike now and partially wrapped with insulation.
So far this is what I've done:
Full service at Nichols Mfg. including their lightweight flywheel, motor mount bolts, and crankcase breather.
Full Sil Motor spaghetti exhaust system.
Forks and shock have been rebuilt and resprung by By Dan Kyle at Kyle Racing.
K&N air filter, and cut off the top of the airbox.
Yoyodyne 48T slipper clutch.
Woodcraft clutch cover, clipons, and shift lever.
Ferracci Stage 1 EPROM
Front brake calipers, master cylinders(brake&clutch)/levers from my 916SPS replaced the stock units
Ferrodo CP211 pads.
Acculign 996 rearsets, relocated the rear brake master cylinder, to side of the engine case as on a 996.
Desmo Times smaller battery upgrade and rear axle plates.
Shift-Tech carbon front and rear fenders.
Replaced all fuel injection hoses.
Safety wired ect. for AFM Racing.
Every nut and bolt I could get my hands on has been replaced with a Titanium unit from Racebolts.
Dymag 3 Spoke cast magnesium wheels(red) are on order, should be here in the next week or two.
Race bodywork is at the painter.
New chain and sprockets, 15/40
First race weekend is March 22-23 at Buttonwillow. Stay tuned for photos.
Ciao,
Brian

Here are some photos of the project, including a couple of the bike as it looked when I first purchased it last August.
Vitho, I did indeed buy the exhaust from Stefan in Germany and have included several photos.

Nice turnout. It should be interesting to see how it fairs at the track. It certainly looks the business.

Hi Brian
Thank you for the god pics
It was exactly what I asked for.
I will definitely stay tuned to se the final results
I have a "-92 851 Strada project-bike" and for the time being I'm collecting the different parts for the project. And a thread like this really gives some inspiration.
Thanks again
