My local shop built and raced this back in the 90's. They just sold it to me, and I'm going to club race it in the GP-legal lightweight CCS classes this year. If you guys could, I'd appreciate it if you could check the pics and maybe give me any thoughts/observations on it, particularly the chassis and assorted bits. I know that a lot of these parts are something special; this is not a feeler for parts' worth as the intent of the sale, which was extremely reasonable, was for me to get this bike back in the environment for which it was built, so I will not be looking to benefit financially from this deal.
However, if there are parts on this bike which shouldn't be potentially destroyed, I want to take this into consideration as I will be racing it and the possibility of this happening will be very real. All honesty/candidness will be extremely appreciated. I do know a bit about it (the frame is interesting, to say the least), but I'd like to see what you guys have to say before I list known details.
Thanks and best regards,
Jim Berard

NICE! Lot's of Ti, lots of magnesium (sweet triples), some nice Corsa bits. Some of these parts are rare... But I'd take it track and race the heck out of it. Although some parts are really in need of improvement. A bike that fine needs real front brakes. And those D&D pipes look criminal on that fine machine. Find some GP calipers and some Termi cans and your bike will be orgasm worthy.

Those boys at MCC do that for you?

Sweet Race Bike
very nice find there and get her out on the track soonest is the way to go.
The frame is interesting, it looks like an early 851/888 frame with later subframe/tank. What seat/fairing is fitted?
What do you know about the frame?
Agreed there are some lush parts on the bike and those mag yokes look like they should be on my bike really π if you would like to trade some alloy ones and something niceπ
Keep us posted of progress

Interesting tank (cf with cut out at front for clip? and never seen a rear caliper carrier like that).
Be good to see it with the bodywork on.
Yokes not much good for you Guy - they for showas not ohlins!

Frame looks like an early street frame (no Corse gussets)(modified for the late rear subframe). I agree with Jay, get some brakes. Those Showa forks can be made into wonderful forks. Rick at Motocd put his 25mm cartridge kit in mine and they are the tits!

MC: Haha, no fancy brakes for me - I have some BrakeTech CI rotors and a different master I'll throw on; the bike only weighs 300#, and I used to run that combo on my '96 M with no probs. Definitely no Termis, although I do have a set of GiaCaMoto carbon cans I might use as that's what the rest of the system is. This would also be fitting given the association this bike shares with Jimmy Adamo (more on this in a sec.) I gotta save my pennies for entry fees and tires!
Sponine: Yep. They do me solids all the time. Whom should I tell them says hello?
Guy: I will definitely put it on the track ASAP. Sorry, the yokes are staying put. I am definitely very thankful to these guys for selling me the bike (I'm not worthy!), and I will put it to good use.
Ok, here's what I know. The frame is an ex- Jimmy Adamo piece. This is verified, as MCC built some motors for Jimmy. (One of their mechanics was with him when he died at Daytona. Incidentally, the same mechanic still works on my bikes.) I was curious if perhaps anyone here had any further info on the frame. I know that it has no serial at all.
The tank, catch can, billet rocker/ride height adjuster, etc, are apparently all factory pieces. Exactly where they came from, I'm not sure. I like this story: The guys say that Jimmy used to fly over to Italy with these huge rollered duffels, walk through the factory, and they'd give him all kinds of parts, which he would then bring back to the states and just go through customs with all this cool stuff. They claim he brought complete motors back this way!
This was before my time, so I never met Jim, but I certainly feel honored to hear the stories... Anyway, how many of these parts came from Jim, and how many came from a catalog? Who knows?
Regarding the rear brake carrier, one of the owners and his dad (who put himself through college way back when by working as a machinist) made it in the shop. Someone told me that they had copied some sort of factory design; I was curious if anyone had seen one like it.
As for the forks, the shop had them TiNitrided back in the day; I'm sure they'll work fine for me. BTW, Monte Nichols also raced this bike with a fair degree of success in the late 90's, and originally, MCC did a couple of 1-2 season finishes in the BEARS series on this bike and a 944SS back in the 90's. Les White rode the SS, Geoff Mellinger rode this one. Interesting sidenote: the very first track bike I ever purchased was the 944, back in 2003. I bought it off Ebay, went to Minnesota to get it, and sold it soon after when I found out what all it needed. Being new to the sport at the time, I wasn't prepared for that kind of outlay; now, of course, I spend thousands more every year - track rhymes with crack. I still have many parts off that bike, including parts of the floating CF rear brake assembly, which was also an ex-Adamo piece. I have this weird sense of satisfaction for having owned both bikes..
Anyway, the rest of the bike: 999cc stroker motor, 300#, 100ish hp, 80ish ft/lbs torque, and an apparently pronounced proclivity for wheelies. It has 888 style bodywork - I have several sets of spares; I'd like to paint it red as it has been far too long since I've had a red Duc, but for now, it will be running the somewhat battle weary yellow set currently fitted. I will post some pics when I get it together. For now, we're refreshing the motor as needed, then I need to get the bike to my suspension guy. Also for now, I'm sticking with the standard set-up; I may do cartridges eventually, but I really need to run the bike first and work my way through it. I have tons of time and go pretty quick on my '96 M, and I'm hoping to adapt to this bike readily. I'm also hoping this one puts me squarely in the hunt here in the midwest; I'm sure the bike is as competive as any machine out there, but I have to beat Ed Key (I'm sure some of you know him) and several other fast guys as well. I've done pretty well in the past (top 5 finishes on my S2R1000 at RA last year, in my first and only outing as an Expert), but I have no idea if I can ever beat Ed. As always, I will do my best, and be thankful just for the opportunity and experience..
I think that's most of what I know; I'll post anything else I think of, and I'll try to post updates once the season begins. Our season this year is very light; 1 Topeka and 4 Blackhawk Farms events. The midwest racing scene has been severely impacted by the recession. I may try some AHRMA events as well..
If anyone comes up with any other ideas on the bike or it's components, again, I'd greatly appreciate it. Make no mistake, I will race this bike, hopefully at Topeka in April, and most certainly at BHF in May. I just wanted opinions on whether or not I should risk ruining some of these parts, but I am a racer at heart, and if I do trash them, I won't regret it too much as the true beauty of this stuff is derived mostly from function. I sure do enjoy looking at this bike, though, and I am extremely grateful to everyone at MCC for this opportunity.

Ah, ok. I see that the frame is similar to another SP2 here on the forum. Hmm.
The bike is in the shop right now, but I do recall that the tank is stamped Ducati underneath. More as I find out.
So, it is obvious that I am OCD/mental, right?

The rocker ride height adjuster looks like a standard adjustable early 851-851/888SP one to me.
I can see a casting mark on it in exactly the same place that my SP4 rocker has one.
I've never seen a rear caliper bracket like that on any factory or customer Corse 888.

Thanks. Just trying to figure this stuff out, not that it matters much anyway. I've always been a 2-valve guy, so I know very little about these bits. One of the guys at the shop thought the rear carrier was a copy of some other design.
Guys, by all means, if I'm full of it on anything here, set me straight. I certainly don't mind being wrong. I love learning about this stuff

Somebody please make those yokes in alloy or what ever they can be done in, i would love a set of those for my showas, just not in magnesium Marvin did them for his, and they look fantastic compared to the alloy units that are the norm.

Nick,
What have you been smoking??π
Why would you want to add weight to your bike?
Marvin made his set of Corse style/offset yokes from billet alloy.
There's nothing wrong with the standard alloy yokes, unless you want to alter the offset.
If/When Phil manages to get the Harris adjustable ones copied, I'll have some of standard/SP5 and SP4 Ohlins yokes for sale.
They're in excellent condition, but have been drilled/tapped to take the Corse style mounted M/cylinders reservoirs.

The GiaCaMoto cans sound perfect, those are important. The brakes are good if they work for you even better. You are planning on doing the most important thing, riding it! Have fun, if you ever decide to part with it let me know.

Farmboy, SUPERBIKE.
I'm creating my bike too with a 851 frame and 900 2 valve engine. Can you please send me some pics how the problem with the inletmanifolds has been solved. I did some welding on the inlet tubes to get the Mikuni's in the right place.

Hi Dulpie,
This motor has 41mm Kiehins mounted on short manifolds, so they are nowhere near the same position as the Mikunis; whereas the Mikunis are mounted side by side, the Kiehins more or less face one another. The bike is at the shop getting new valves, but I'll try to get a pic when I'm there having beers tomorrow night. Interesting question, though, as I have been planning to install 2 valve motor in another 851 chassis I have. At this point, I'm not sure whether I want to put the 944 or DS1000 motor in it. Regardless, that ain't happening any time soon.
Found out some more details on the bike today; the valves are each 1mm over, 43/38. It also definitely has race cams in it; I think they're marked DMV9? The valves were in stock @ Parts Unlimited right up in Wisconsin (!!!!), and I ordered a set of MBP collets from Mike at EMS yesterday (awesome guy), so we should have the motor back together soon. As I said, MCC built this motor, but it's been so long noone there remembers exactly what's in it. This is fun stuff.
I've sold some of the parts I listed here; thanks to all as it's a big help to the budget. So far, things are workin out very nicely - I'm hoping my lucky streak holds out with sorting the suspension; I'd really like to get a track day or two under my belt before Topeka. We'll see. Fingers crossed...

---> No, no, it's not you only !!!!
I've got the same feeling regarding that part !!!
By the past, we talked about the opportunity to make some but now, the subject is lost in the deep of the forum ...
Regarding the black finish, it's what I've done on my 926 et I do not regret...
