Tricolore Strada 16 Inch Wheel change.

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering how difficult it would be to change the original 16" Mavic wheels for a pair of 17" units from a later model?

As I understand it, the rear 16" tyre is difficult to obtain now and the handling is a bit 'quirky' with the original wheels (although I have yet to ride it myself).

Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Tricolore wheel conversion

Hi,

I have done this and it can be done.

You will need a set of later wheels, standard Brembo or Marvic/Marchis as available.
You will also need standard discs 320 front and 245 rear
+ rear brake caliper carrier
+ front speedo drive
+ full rear wheel sprocket carrier and thrust spacers etc
I took the easy route and fitted a pair of later M1R forks to suit the 320mm discs
If you keep your old M1R's you will need to make adaptor plates up to shift the front calipers. This will retain the appearance of your Tricolore.
If you want to ride her either get Maxton to rework the forks or simply go the full nine and grab a pair of Showa's + yokes of a later bike.

I am having a big think about my spares hoard and will keep the forum posted as I have all the above apart from the forks.

Hi, the M1R forks are very dated in design and the later showa/ohlins offer are much much better IMO. If you are going for the changes as discussed then have the forks overhauled at least.

The front guard will still work but will need small nylon spacers between the mounting lugs and the alloy plate to lift it to clear the bigger 17" wheel.

How come I keep seeing motard looking things with 16" tires front and rear. Don't these fit the 16" tricolore rims or something.

16.5" Rims

Maybe you're thinking of 16.5" wheels and tires that SuperMotards use now. 16" front wheels were tried in WSB on Ducati Corsa 916/955/996 models. Troy Corser tried them a bit.

But 17" is where it's at for road tires.

All the Supermoto's over here in the UK use 17" wheels??
It gives them a very wide choice.
