Mr.R wroteI'm not Brad but here's my take using my experience/gathered knowledge...
You can't use P7 chips in a P8 or vice versa they just don't work, but as Mark T's said it possible to just plug a P8 into the existing loom.
MarkT wroteYou can run a P8 ECU on any of the bikes because the pin outs are all the same- but I think you would be better off looking for an FIM SP4 P7 chip then trying to make any duel injector P8 FIM chip work with your bike. Since the processors are different I doubt if a P8 chip will work in a P7 box--a Brad Black question.
As you can see Mr R, your first part of the reply was repeating MarkT's prior post.
Mr.R wroteFit a P8 ECU* with a 916 Strada chip as a baseline setting and then get it all custom mapped on a dyno, with the new map burnt straight onto a chip.
(*0r it could also be done using a PC 3 usb but these can and do go wrong IME, whereas a chip rarely break down in use.)
MarkT wroteIf you want to use a P8 box then I would start out with at a different P8 duel injector base chip like a FIM 916 SP chip which you will still need to modify the maps. Since the FIM days are in the past making the mods to your maps will require using an after market buffer/modifier box and a data logger or a dyno. If you do a search you will find many discussions about fuel injection maps for our bikes.
Another repeat of MarkT's prior post, though this time with a little useful information with regards to your opinion on the Power Commander's reliability.
Mr.R wroteThe P8's have the ability to offset the mapping for the individual cylinders, (both cylinders on these motors need wildly differing fueling to make them run spot on) the single green injectors are capable of delivering enough fuel to make 65 rwbhp each, so are good enough for 130 rwbhp, which your 888cc SP4 is never going to make in it's current state of tune.]I wouldn't fit a Corse chip because they'll push the power up well over 10,000 rpm and the secret to keeping one of these motors reliable is to keep the revs/real power below 10K.
MarkT wroteThere are a few reasons I believe that the FIM Corse chip would not be a plug and play with your bike---cams----valve sizes---injector flow rate--- map set points.
The Corse chip is made for either G cams or a combo of 431 and G cams which are sweeter at higher rpm's and the map's are set up accordingly ---the '93 Corse's have 31/36mm size valves and your SP4 has 29/33mm valves--- Corse's (or any P8 bike-or P7 single injector bikes from '90 up) used higher flow green injectors- and a Corse chips rpm set points and timing are biased to higher rpms and throttle positions while a street bike's set points are biased to lower end.
The 916 SP also has different cams and has 31/34 mm valves using green injectors. At a minimum you will have to switch to green injectors -----or crank up your fuel pressure which is easy to do with the original style PR- but this affects the entire map and probably will not get your map where it needs to be for the street.
Brad has also pointed out that the P7 and P8 boxes use theTPS starting set points differently- but it is easy to reset your TPS for a P8 box.
Steve you should be praised for being so succinct in your above quotation, though it is once again repeating what MarkT has written, though Mark has added specific differences.
Mr.R wroteHere's what I would do with the spec that you've got...
Fit single green injectors to the TB's and disconnect the 2nd pair of reds leaving them in situ',
Up the fuel pressure to 4.5 bar via the fuel pressure regulator, the standard "Small" fuel pump's fitted to the '92> 851/888's are well up to this in my experience.
At long last the one piece of information that is really adding something new, hidden amongst regurgitated text for which you criticise motor journalists of doing and hence my echo comment.
