i had the feeling the paioli shock in the db3/4 was shorter than the ss shock.

is that a db2 swingarm reed?

Yes. That's off my DB2. I found it was dimensionally the same as the DB3/4 alloy swingarm. The shocks will swap and bolt right up.
As you can see from the next pics, the SS swingarm has the shock mount down the center of the bike, and it's a lot farther away than the DB2 lower shock mount.

I had another idea, where you could use the swingarm and suspension from a S4R Monster. The DB4 frame has some perfect points where you could bolt in a fabricated "sub unit" that would attach the rocker arm from the S4R.

What's the big giggle over the Bimota frames?

A good friend of mine Alan Long* built a very nice sporting 900 special using a Mantra frame, he called it his "Ultralight" he or his wife Nora have ridden it all over Europe, with the only problem being a collasped rear wheel bearing, the problem being that Bimota used a non standard bearing which took them some time to locate in Italy, in fact they were at the WDW not far from where the Bim's are made...
You can't make this sort of story up! 😏

*This bike has won more best bike/special awards than almost any other bike over here and it gets used.
Alan and Nora are now old age pensioners, but can still be found at bike gatherings all over Europe on a pair of their bikes, they have a large collection inc' a Raymond Roche rep, that actually gets ridden!
Alan's attention to detail is 2nd to non when he's self building a Ducati based special, he makes all of the one off parts himself, inc' making a 900 Yamaha Diversion tank fit the Mantra frame, he cut the bottom out and reshaped it then welded in a new bottom that cleared the Ducati motor etc.
The result of this was that everyone who's seen it thinks it's a genuine Bimota fuel tank/model.

the shop i previously worked at was the importer for a year or so in 1995, so i had a fair bit of hands on experience with them. not an overly pleasant experience in a retail and service sense for much of it.

a special with all the bimota issues fixed is another matter.

Hi Thomas,

A mate of mine Paul aka 'Pablo Pirate' on the Ducati forums who lives less than 200 metres from my home, (he rode and stopped with me to this years IOM TT) has built a very nice 900SL based special, he calls the bike "Watercooled Madness" with a mildly tuned/blueprinted Chris Steedman/CJS Racing ST3 motor in it, he has a 1098 frontend on it tuned by K-tec along with a rear shock set up by the same company, along with some BST Carbon Fibre wheels and lightweight discs the bike handles fantastically and goes quite well with 118 rwbhp and very little all up weight.

Would be great if you could get some pictures.
118 rwbhp sounds like a prefect engine for that project. Getting that much out of an aircooled 2v would be very expensive and not so reliable. St´3 engines goes for around 6-800 euros.
Me and may mate has done a few K-tec uppgrades in varius showas for ducati friends in sweden with good result.

Hi Thomas,

I've Just picked up on your request for some pic's of Paul's 900SL/ST3,
I'll see what I can do.
I think he's home on leave as he's a submariner in the Royal Navy, I'll try and catch up with him over the weekend.
He made a wooden pattern for the radiator then had a specialist firm make one up from that, it looks very neat/almost factory.

Howdo!!!
Say Mr.R the other night and he mentioned the project your doing. Have seen a few pics from Ducati Kamnea in Germany with the same frame and utilising a 900 2Valve motor (Looks quite nice).
Just doing a few more mods to me Superlight (Kevlar tank, Ti Engine bolts & Corse breather in the airbox.........Nemesis/PCV to come).
Bike weighs about 185kg weight, full tank (Before new mods) and makes 115Bhp n 77lb of torque (Still a bit more to come me thinks with fine tuning) Power wheelies in 3rd and has scared a few R1's!!!!

Still not sure weather to use an aircooled ds1000 or st3.
Seema as st3 is a bit bore bang for the buck and not so common.

Well, with lots of projects in the pipeline (Laverda 500 "Barcelona" and 3C pplus the 888 and the rainbike) I let the db4 frame and swing go for a good deal (for both i hope).
During the time I had collected a pair of 1198 s ohlins fork, two of trippleclamp (same as on my 888) with 27mm offset, pair of marvic penta mag wheels (new) and a db4 body in fiberglass. All of it went.
I got an st4 frame wich I will have a look at to see if I can get a 888 lookalike frame for my track bike. I more or less have double of everything to my bike.
Would be nicer with a 888 frame and paper though.
