Fellow forum members, forgive me for i know this a Ducati site.
I am in a predicament that i'm sure many bikers would hate to be in, as i have to make a heart wrenching decision whether to sell my beloved Laverda SF. We have been through alot together in the 20 years i have owned her. Many bikes have come and gone since i first bought my SF, i had abslolutley no misgivings about selling any of them when i decided it was time for a change. I even commuted on her for a few years before all the chrome fell off and i ended up carrying out a full restoration after the clutch cable snapped.
You see, i have seriously got the Ducati bug and no longer ride my Lav, which has a clutch that makes your forearms ache if held in for more than ten seconds and forget traffic jams, doesnt inspire too much confidence in the handling dept (though not as bad as my previous 2 Jota's), feels as though it weighs twice as much as my 851, doesnt brake too cleverly. But, i think it looks bloody gorgeous, as i'm sure the attached pictures will testify.
Today, i give it a quick check over put in some fresh fuel and it started first time, when the Duke doesnt start i take the old girl. But i just dont use her enough and i think it should go to a good home where she can be ridden (no sniggering at the back there).
Sorry to bore you all with my story of letting her go, but i just wanted to share my story with fellow members.

That looks absolutely lovely...I personally would keep it! ๐
No Road Tax on that I believe...umm, that would look nice in my garage!
falco1uk
looks great, you should keep her and grow old together....

I guess I would sell her if I had no money to pay my bills but beyond that I would certainly keep her. Just for old times sake if nothing else. She's beautiful!

The drumbrake sf is one of the best looking laverdas ( I have 7...).
Non of my Laverdas can be compared with my 888 (or the 900 ssie) when it comes to handling but it would take a LOT for me to sell any of them.
750 twins is quite cheap in Sweden (compared with bevel and sporty guzzis) so would have kept it...

Ducati or Laverda? Both of Course !
Don't sell it!! KEEP IT!!! You can never go back... ever.. Don't let go of the things that brought you happiness! ๐
(speaking from personal experience here.. even if i could buy back what i let go, it would never be the same, it would be a substitute.)

Its tax exempt mate and only costs ยฃ95 a year to insure agreed value with Carol Nash, its a difficult one, dont worry its not going anywhere in a hurry. Just dont use it enough thats the problem.

Perhaps you should jack in the many jobs that you do, 'fingers in pies', then you'd have the time to enjoy it! ๐

I still have my S2 I brought new in 83, it suffers the same as your SF, but many years ago after many adventures I decided its too much a part of my life and simply is just not for sale. No matter what! Now I lift up its cover ever now and then, and it just feels good having it.

Thanks Boy, if i stopped my many jobs i wouldnt be able to indulge my passion for biking and i would be out on my ear and not even able to afford a Honda cbx 550, the kids would starve and the missus would run of with the milkman

Cancel the milk and keep the Laverda!
I had a 79 Jota and a 1200 Motodd and I really wish I hadn't sold them.

Keep It!!!
Unless you need the money..... keep it.
You have a 20 year history and the bike looks fantastic! I think you might regret selling her further down the line.
If you do decide to sell - let me know what you want for her ๐
Mr.R
Hi Inda,
Some things are like the family silver, they're just 'NOT FOR SALE' as they can never be replaced.
Now if your old 'Lav' was an SFC my advice would be to sell it to me! ๐
As you all know I've owned my old Bevel for over 31 years now and my family will bury me before it goes up for sale, it 'IS' the family Silver!
The same goes for 3 of my 4 Ducati's, Nessie wants me to sell the '91
851/888 to buy her a new false left foot/lower leg if she goes ahead with the amputation! ๐ฏ
We're both off to see the surgeon on Friday to discuss this possibility.

Many thanks for all the posts regarding my old Lav, and you have all made very rational and interesting arguments for me keeping/selling the bike. I have read with great pleasure the support and advice given by my fellow bikers/forum members regarding my liitle quandry, but there is no easy solution.
The problem is i just dont get time to ride the bike and it just sits in various garages, i have moved home several times during the last six years and now it is living at my mums house, so if i want to take it for a spin, i have to get over to the old dears house. Also, i usually take my old 851 into London on a daily basis. Has anyone tried riding a 40 year old bike in London traffic.....its an experience alright.
Dont get me wrong guys, most people who like old Italian iron would love her, and i absolutley adore it, makes me smile when i see it and sounds lovely pootling along at 80mph. So, your all thinking whats he complaing about? i just wished she got more use......i have done 50 miles in the last five years, thats not enough.
Steve (Mr R) i was thinking of you and your bevel when i started this thread, i know how you would never sell your bevel, as you have been through alot together, just like me and the Lav. Hope you dont have to sell your 851 and you find another way of paying for Nessie's new leg.
But, after i posted the thread and looked at the pics and took her for a spin i fell in love with her all over again and i remembered the time i was riding along in Shepherds Bush and i got pulled over by a traffic cop, he wanted to have a closer look at the bike thats all.......๐
Dont worry guys its not going anywhere in a hurry, was just thinking out aloud and getting your valuable feedback, so far you have all convinced me that the old girl has a stay of execution.

which one?
Hi,
Well im a great beleiver in first impressions, and just then was the first time ive seen your yellow bird, and its lovely, keep it, and keep the Ducati too as already said, if you really need the cash, take a loan, once youve sold her, thats it youre never getting her back.
Conclusion, both.
Cheers, trust alls well๐
