$3.00 rocker pin puller tool

This is for those of you who haven't delved in to your heads yet with fears of what lurks inside. Fear not, it's not a black art. I have fashioned a puller for less than 3 bucks from my local hardware store. Just grabbed a pvc reducer which has a dia large enough for the pin to enter, a 50mm m5 bolt and some nuts and washers. At first I used a shorter m5 with a socket instead of the pvc, but that tends to mar the surface. The pvc is plenty strong and not marks. It works like a charm! All for under 3 usd. "But wait there's more!!! You also get a piece of mind for no extra cost... AND you can use the money you saved for resurfacing you bad rockers😡 "

ps. I am hoping my 851/888 rockers are in good shape so I don't have to shell out $50 per for reconditioning.

Neat idea there Rob, I just use a slide hammer that I made when I was an apprentice several decades ago.
Now I feel old, bo**ocks.

Hi,
I used to use all of these tricks years ago back in the Bevel days, then (on my insistence... "If I take the job? You will buy all of the tools needed") the shop I worked at bought a full set of Ducati service tools and I used the geuine article, it was so much easier to use that...
I bought one for myself, then when I bought a 4V I bought the tool and when I bought my single I bought the tool for that as well.

They cost a bit more than $3, but the Bevel twin ones easily earned it's keep a 1,000 times over by now, the one for our 4V Desmoquatro motors already earned it's keep in time and ease of use.

I doubt that the one for the single will earn it's keep though, as I've converted the '74 250 Desmo's head to MBP colletts, Bevel Twin helper springs, lead free valve seats and it's already been gasflowed and ported to accept the rubber mounted 32mm smoothbore carb, so short of a large BANG I doubt that I'll need to get inside that head for several years.

For a cheap bastard (no offense 😉 ) maybe I should say frugal... you sure have accumulated a lot of stuff!!! Extra this and extra that. But, I do agree with your method to acquire and accumulate. Maybe when I get to your age I will have lots of Ducati stuff too.😁

New Improved (cheaper) Rocker Pin Tool!

I don't know why I got this idea to make this tool tonight. I was in the basement looking at my cases and boxes of parts when suddenly I thought about the factory rocker arm slide hammer tool and figured I could make one... that would be better than the $3.00 puller I previously made. So, I dug through various cans of nuts and bolts and doohickeys and came up with the parts needed. I have no idea how I managed to get something with a metric thread and I don't even know where that thing came from... the hex part with the threaded end. I bought a mig/flux welder last winter to fix some of my equipment. I really suck at welding but I figured I'd give it a whirl. A couple hours of finding the pieces and welding everything and the end result works like a charm! It ain't pretty but it was cheap.... $0.00😎. So, don't buy the special tools if you can make them yourself.

Hi,
I can see what you ment about your welding, but if you've gone that far why didn't you copy the genuine tool?
It wouldn't have been that hard to replicate and it's a lot easier to use than the slide hammer type tool.

Steve, I just picture things in my head and then make them. My intention was not to copy anything... just wanted to make something work... and I don't have access to the factory tool. So, the factory tool is not a slide? I doubt it's any easier as mine takes only two seconds for the pin to pop out. Once again, it works and that's what matters to me. Mind you I usually am welding large pieces (and thick) of steel on my machines/equip so it was quite a task to place a weld on some 2mm thick washers at 2am... with no beer😎 .

The factory tools pictured in my earlier post use the smaller T to turn the tool into the rocker shaft, then you just wind the larger T and it pulls the rocker shaft out of the head, spin back the larger T and hold both T's to push the shaft back in again.
It makes it easy to pull the LH side opening rocker shafts just enough to allow the rocker to slide over and drop down so that you can pull the cam out.

Ok, I recall that tool now... looks kinda like the engine turning tool. I could see how that would be nice for the cam removal.
