It was advertised as a 91 model but im not so sure. wondering if anyone could shed some light on it for me?
I paid $8500 NZ dollars and am in love with it.😁
Any info be much appreciated. Thanks

Mr.R
Hi Yulie,
Nice looking bike you've got hold of.
The frontends not from a '91, the '91's had the upsidedown Showa forks and not the M1R's.

welcome to the addiction. too many things on my mind here to remember its time to read the vin.
Claire4dukes
Hi Yulie
Bikes in NZ use the date of first registration as the model year, not the actual date of manufacture. For NZ and Aus 91 was a cross over year between the 851 with M1R forks and the upside down Showa items, they were both marketed at the same time with a price difference of around $1500 more for the Showa models. Are you coming to the National Ducati Rally in March 2010, check out
www.docnz.co.nz for details
Cheers

So an SP3 found in the back of a warehouse in the crate still on its MSO and registered today would be a 2009 model? interesting.

It does not quite work that way.I think it is an 90 model but the vin # will confirm.If the bike arrived in NZ late 90 or early 91 it will have a compliance plate put on there on the month they did it.
I have a 1098 tricolore that is complianced and registered as march 2008 as it was a late shipment.The vins says 2007 model(which we already know)
i will have to find the page that tells you what number in the vin denotes year model.
firebird
Found it.It is the 10th number if it has the 17 number vin,which woul be L
Hope this helps.
955SPA corsa models with the off-highway racing models such as the 750 F1 Laguna Seca, 851 Tri-Color Racer, 916SPS, 996SPS, 996R and the 748R. Non-corsa US models have 17-character VINs. In 1980, a new 17-digit VIN was mandated by the DOT for all vehicles imported into the US.
2000 748r example VIN: ZDM3SB3SXYB001791
Prior to 2002, non-US models were assigned a 17-character VIN that does not embody a check digit character that's been required by USDOT since 1980.
Example - 1999 Eurospec 996SPS VIN: ZDMH100AAXB002526
Post-1980 US models and post-2002 non-US models have a 17-character VIN as follows:
Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Z = Italy
D = Ducati
M = Motorcycle ( i.e. ZDM = Ducati)
Vehicle Descriptor Section
The 4th through 8th positions in the VIN are the Vehicle Descriptor Section or VDS. This is used, according to local regulations, to identify the vehicle type and may include information on the platform used, the model, and the body style. Each manufacturer has a unique system for using this field.

It looks almost identical to my bike before I got to it. Somebody has changed the mirrors, or they ran out of the round ones when they built it. ( box of bits construction theory) That makes it a 1990 biposto. It may or may not have a Duo Shock and the race rear suspension rocker arm. It also may or may not have pankl rods and lightened oil pump and timing gears. It will have a P7 ECU Either way its a nice bike, with plenty of potential if you want to go down that road.
the first 2 pics are 1991, the third is a 1989/90. The last is what happens to these bikes if they sit in the shed too long. 😁

strictly speaking, and ducati didn't adhere to their own model specs very much back then, the 90 has M1R marzocchi forks and round mirrors, the 91 has showa forks and rectangular red mirrors. iirc the round mirrors mount with one bolt, the rectangular mirrors mount with two, so to swap them you also need to swap the front sub frame assembly. the compliance plate will tell you when it was first imported and that will give you the best idea as to when it was built, the vin will tell you what it's SUPPOSED to be but ducati were renowned for using up old stock regardless of how far into the new model year they were. The castiglionis rescued ducati from liquidation by the italian government but were more enthusiasts than business genius' and came oh so close to bankruptcy themselves on more than one occasion, because of this, suppliers were often supplying parts on COD only or holding out until accounts were paid, this led to some people getting bonus parts for free just to complete a bike and others missing out on upper spec options on SP's and the like because of their inability to pay suppliers. this became most prevalent with the 916 and the castiglionis eventually sold a major share to pacific TPG in '97. Their full on but mostly fruitless assault on 500cc grand prix racing is widely blamed as the main reason for their financial struggles.

oh, nice bike by the way!

851 Strada biposto
Hi mate,
Your 851 in the pictures looks to me like an '89 or '90 model.I had an 851 like yours in 1990,but mine was the single seat version(monoposto). Otherwise it looks the same bike,i.e. Marzocchi conventional forks ,large front fender.Mine was an '89 model,so I think I'm right in saying yours could be a '90 model.As another chap has said,all the info will be on the VIN plate.
Cheers, adie851

Thankyou
😄 Thanks everyone for your kind remarks and information.
The vin info looks very informative (to say the least). I am up north for xmas with the family at the moment, so will have to wait till I get home in the new year to relate all that info to my vin.
To Claire, I would love to make it to the Duc owners rally, but my job as a fisherman maks it hard to plan too far ahead, so will have to play it by ear for now, but fingers crossed.
Thanks again to you all and merry xmas and happy new year
Regards
yulie
