Has anyone ever tried (and possibly failed) to turn an ST4S into a 888 track bike?
Not having a spare frame kicking around and chatting with a friend last night we wondered if you could just dump the lights, seats and fairings. Then add 888 fairings with a new front fairing mount, seat unit, new high pipes and find a track.
It's bound not to be that simple I know, other thoughts were to reduce the trail by using Monster S4 yokes to quicken the steering.

You would'nt have seen a certain damaged ST4S on ebay would you Stafford😉
Was thinking about it myself - taking the ohlins shock and adjustable forks off for my ST3 then making some type of hybrid 888 looking project or using the engine in a 888 rolling chasis 😏
The rear subframe is fixed on the ST range not detachable like the 888 - suppose you could cut it off😯 , steering head angle is also different.
On the US .ms site there are quite a few ST's that have been made racier!

Not on eBay Jonathan, it's in my garage and TBH perfectly good except they don't sell very well. So having enjoyed my first time on the track last year on my Monster and the 888 I'd rather ride something that if I binned it I wouldn't get too upset over. I mean to say imagine rebuilding you SP5 and then getting it slid down the road!
The ST is a bit of a lard ass and steering not as quick as some, so with a yoke change, lower the gearing a bit and it should be a flyer.

Stafford my thoughts exactly, I have an ST2 frame for making a play thing once I have done a bit of cutting, with a spare swing arm, front Showa forks and lots of carbon to go on it! 😁
However judging by how long everything takes to make and modify, I bet you will beat me getting it done. 🙁 After all yours is complete and running and mine is just a pile of bits! 😯

Hi lads,
There was a ST4 or ST4S made to look like a 888 on this very forum sometime in the past, you could try a search of the forum and have a look at that project.
Also it hasn't been uncommon for forum members to fit the ST4/4S motors into 851/888's.
I've opened out the engine mounting holes on my '92 851/916cc motor/frame to 12mm, so that I can swap between that motor and the ST4 cased 984cc motor I've got as an 'as and when' cash allows project,
(I've got all of the parts, BIG valve 916SP heads, 955 Corse pistons/barrels, Carillo rods, 748 close ratio cluster etc, I just need the cash for the machining of the cases and the crank lightening/balancing).
I've used Nichols Engineering engine mounting bolts for the conversion, they do the job and look very trick, the sleave nuts with stepped down Hex heads are actually Titanium and the 12mm size is ment/claimed to stiffen the frame.
Personally if I wanted a good/different Ducati based trackday tool,(and I had a reasonable not huge budget) I'd look for a cheap/tatty 851*, you could always sell off the motor and nail an ST 4 valve motor into it, if you wanted more power.
*The thing here is that you can find 1/2 way decent 748/916's for the same sort of money.
A good/old friend of mine has offered me a low milage/recently serviced/tidy/ early ('86 mk2, 4-1 exhaust system model) FZ750 Genesis which needs tyres for £500, it's been dynojetted for the race can, got an Ohlins shock, Maxton'ised front suspension and braided hoses!
Now that would be a 'Throw away bike', capable of 160 mph.
I've spent that sort of cash on an Arai lid and a pair of cheap gloves in the past!!!

What is the offset of the ST4S yokes?
BTW, a friend has used his St4S for a track bike, just took the bags off, very good track bike! He didn't have any trouble with the slow steering. After all, isn't that what the 25-27mm offset corse yokes do, slow the steering down!!

Thought it may have been the ST4S that is on ebay at the moment Stafford, its the later model and not bad money.
Think it depends how much you want it to look like a 888, as marvin said you could just strip it down, drop the forks a bit and take her out on track.
If you have a look on the .ms sport touring section there is loads of ST's that have been changed in various ways - although the rear subframe means that most have had to keep the look of the ST rear.
First thing to remove is the centre stand - mate took his 3 month old ST3S to a trackday in Mondello Park last year, got a bit cocky - stand dug in and he wrote off the bike 😯
Found one interesting use for the ST3 engine - fit a 1098 frame - click on the link and then go to 'bikes' then 'B-rad' ;

Steve - I have a bit of a soft spot for the old FZ750's - Sam McClements raced one in '86 TT, NW etc for Yamaha (along with a FJR1200!!! in the proddy class) so if you don't want it....

Not sure what the offset is at the yoke itself, but the trail is 102mm on the ST4s and 96mm on the Monster S4r. The headstock angle on both bikes is 24 degrees.
I'm at the measuring up stage of a project of my own, the idea being to quicken the steering of my ST4s. Havng recently had an ST4s and an S4r at the same time, the ST is nowhere near as quick steering or light steering as the monster, so the spare set of monster yokes I have will be going in fairly soon.

You might need VLC mediaplayer to see it.
Filmed by Tomtom from his not so slow 996 sps.

TomTom was having so much fun, I'm dead jealous. The St4s and pillion wasn't being slow either, looked tidy and stable.
Took my wife around on a track day a few years back the extra weight is hard on the wrists. Still, like I said "so much fun".😁 😁

hallo,
here some more pic's of the bike for narcos.
every time i go to that shop there is something nice to be seen, from now on i always take me camera with me.
on the day i took these pic's they also had 996 of troy corse standing there.
i also once saw a 888 corsa who use to race here in belgium(with valvoline sponsering on it)and a 888 with a supermono fairing who use to race in netherlands but i have no pic's of those🙁

Hi
I did this conversion a couple of years ago.
Fitted a ST4S (996) engine with SPS cams in my 888 SP5 and converted
the motor to use the P8 ECU with twin injectors.
It runs beutifully and pumps out 130 RWH.
