Went out on a group ride today. Nice coolish day with a bit of moisture in the air (a little too much at times, sort of rain really). The new gearing of the bike is spot on. Most of the ride was following guys and just generally enjoying being out and about. I did however find a couple of pieces of dry road to see how the engine really performed.
I gave it some in 3rd to 9.5k then had a nice change into 4th. I must have just hit the sweet spot around 8k as the bike punched forward and the front wheel went all light and a little wobble happened. Oooo I said to myself. Nice!π π
Then later on I came upon a nice straight (Boonah/ Ipswich rd for the locals) , from 4th, this time to 10.5k then into 5th. The bike was pulling like a train, and i wasn't even tucked in behind the screen. How everβ¦.. the road surface was not the best. Have you ever seen the movie "The right stuff" Old mate Chuck gets launched into space. A bit of a shaky ride. Well, I looked down at a blurry looking thing I assumed to be the speedo, between 230-240kph it seemed to be trying to indicate, the shift light was lit up (on at 9.5k). Unfortunately the bike was bouncing/vibrating on the shit road surface, causing it to sort of slide/skate across the road. Still controllable, just, (much thanks, at this point, to God, for supplying gyroscopic stability). I gave the event a very high entertainment point score, as well as being as close as I'll ever get to doing a Yeager joyride caper. π
So I backed off from somewhere around 10k, and waited for the other guys. I never even made it into 6th to find out where it runs out of puff.π
The oil temp went up to 85- 90Β° and the water stayed at 77Β°
Then I had some fun with a Hypermotard 1100, He wasn't in the running really. Same with a BMW 1200 road traily thing.
The engine is really free and smooth and revy from 5k-7.5k, then somewhere after 7.5k, it gets rather serious rater quickly to 10.5k+. Its Ok around 4k, and complete and utter shit at 3.5k and below, as you would expect. Iβm calling it "run in now".
Iβm also considering gold valving the Showaβs now, in order to reduce the brown factor.

I was wondering what kind a chip currently fits into the ECU with this new engine ???

Hi Griff,
That sounds good, I take it that you're now running 15/41?
Like you've found out, my 'Mildly' tuned motor now outstrips the standard suspension.
This winter I'm hoping to have the (yet to be fitted) SP4 Ohlins frontend and 900 Monster Ohlins rear shock overhauled/re-valved to suit my weight/riding style, as I've been finding bumps on roads that I previously thought were fairly smooth.
As usual I'm strapped for cash.
This week I found out the cost of rebuilding my old MZ's motor is around Β£500...π―
Fuck me the bikes not worth that much! π
I've got the top man in the UK for building road/race MZ's doing the job, I couldn't be arsed to pull the motor apart myself, I spend MORE than enough time playing with Ducati's after a full days work.
But the saving in fuel (over riding the 851/916 to work) will repay the outlay inside of 8 months and it should be good for another 70,000+ miles, the original motor lasted 77,000 miles and was still going...Just!
This week I've sold Β£250 worth of 888 spares, my old mum gave me a cheque for Β£500 (because I'm an excellent son) and my boss gave me a small bonus as I've not been late or had a day off sick for the last 4 months, on top of my normal weeks pay + overtime.
I banked a months wages in a week and I'm still almost 2 months wages overdrawn FFS!
On another note my 851/916 passed it's MOT (Road legal test) and the tester weighed the old girl, she came in at spot on the nose of 200 kg's with a full tank of fuel -10 miles worth (about 1 lt) burnt on the way to the testing station.
102.5 kg's front 97.5 kg's rear.
This makes her lighter than a 888 SP(4)S, (Claimed factory weight, we all know how accurate they are don't we? π ) the lightest of all the standard road going 851/888's, but a real 'Porker' when compared to a 851/888/926 Corse bike.
Not too bad for a bike that started out as a '92 Strada, (the heaviest of all the 851/888's) that still wears original alloy 3 spoke Brembo's, steel tank, Hawker Odyssey PC545 battery, (it's a f'king anchor chain!) fuck off heavy barend weights and a 'Fat B'stard' Corbin seat pad.
I reckon that I can still shave around another 5-8 kg's (maybe more) from her without going to Mag' wheels, Ti' spindels, carbon tank, whilst still keeping her road legal/comfortable/built to last on the road and still have a full compliment of standard lights.

Hi Phil I'm using an FIM megazone for a P8 and FIM hand held terminal.
I think pretty much the eng is finished, just some minor tuning with the Hand held terminal. My fuel economy is 14.3 km/lt in cruise, which is a fair way away from a target of 18-20km/lt, so I'll have a play with that. Its hard to get a good fuel economy figure when you go on runs and get amongst it. Luckily there is always a few km to travel to get to the roads where you can have fun. This travel is where I got my fuel economy figure from yesterday.
As for the next plan. The Showa's need to be serviced, as they haven't been touched in 10 years. Last time I replaced the oil and the bushes that Tiz is looking for. This time I'll put in a set of gold valves or a similar product from tecknik racing (
http://teknikracing.rtrk.com.au/?scid=28689&kw=4204623) and go for some non aerating oil like Ohlins. After talking to the new Mechanic at the Shop who is right into suspension, its the way to go. Much better than relying on the age old bevel technique of just hanging on for fear of a grim death.

Steve Mildly tuned, is a bit of an understatement π, but if you have to classify it, it's reasonable. I'm keen to stalk a few 848's. Next month I think I can arrange a bit of performance challenge with a tricked up one. A nice straight drag race should sort it out. I just need to be able to keep up and I'll be happy.
With these machines, as with any really, any weight you can dump is a good thing that's for sure, but as always price is a problem. Ti axles is a bit extreme for the road. As for light wheels well, I kind of feel that a bit of weight there for road use is not necessarily a bad thing considering road surfaces. (See thanking God).
As for the money thing mate, you are not alone. But it can't be all bad as we are still playing motorbikes, its just things don't happen as fast as we'd like them. Like my cycle cat tripple clamp. I machined up the sleeves to fill the gap between the 53mm of the clamp and the fork leg 50mm, Now I just have to find some cash to anodize them and the fork valve kit (I will have a price on the Technik kits for Showa's this week, as they are sending a catalog to the shop) . I've had a quick phone call with the mechanic and they are much the same in performance, he has a set in his bike. So price will be the issue. Gold valves are brass, Technik T valves are hard anodized Aluminum. And to set up the Technik valves you need to start from scratch, where as Race tech provide starting data on most bikes.

Just got off the phone from Tecknik racing and Race tech Australia. For just the compression valve. Retail AUS$253 for Technikracing and race tech Gold valve at $249. The Technik guy reckons he has all the base setting available the same as Race tech. For me its looking like Tecknic racing on the weight side of things. By the way a full rebound and compression kit for Tecknic racing is AUS$506. But as I'm not doing track work, the compression kits and good oil is all I need. For the Showa fork owners both of these valves will increase performance to as good as if not better than Ohlins, and thus reduce the Brown factor!
For those that don't know Ohlins give you a Plusher ride as they soak up the bumps better basically. But as you are aware they are expensive.
Griff
I wonder if the Technik Racing decal is any good. π

Hi griff, just had my forks gold valved and overhauled by Paul at Beerwah. Have only had two rides since one half hearted and one decent one. Found the front way smoother and planted. Paul set them up for my weight and said if I need to adjust anything call him first. At this stage I don't think I'll be making any calls.
May see you at Bevans this Saturday but at present I am a bit slow(let me finish) on the body as am getting over a hernia op.π±
Cheers,
Rob

I'm going to be a no show at Bevo's gala event unfortunately. No Pirelli girls for me. I have to fly down to Melbourne on Friday morning. Mums not well. So I'm going down to look after her for a bit.
Pitty, he should have a nice turn out. I would mind going for a look. And to get a blue ribbon for the most stickers. π
Paul Ducati, is he back doing bike bits again. I met him a while back and he was doing door struts. Old habits die hard eh.
Not that it has anything to do with anything, but I met, a about an hour before, a guy who put a Canberra Jet engine in a boat. And it crashed burst into flames and sunk strangely enough, as he had that back yard engineer look about him. Showed me photos and all. The whole set up had that special home made look. The look that makes you go π―
Is the Hernia from the bike indecent per chance?

Hi Griff,
Looks like it will have to be another time then. Hope mum gets on the mend but I'm sure she'll be happy to see you.
Yep i'm sure the hernia was from lifting the bike back on to the lifter. I certainly wasn't going to drag it off the thing. Didn't feel anything at the time except anger, if I had a gun I would've shot myself in the foot just to teach myself a lesson.
Anyway, all is good now with new clipons and uprated forks. I havn't seen Paul Ducati for quite a few years now, last time was at a club meeting when I used to go there.
Cheers
Rob
