Which engine fits perfectly in a 851 or a 888 frame?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if a 916/996/998 engine fits without too many modifications in a 851 or a 888 frame?
Has anyone tried this before?

None of the SSS (916 style) engines "fit perfectly." The most common engines are ST4 (916), ST4s (996), or Monster S4RS (998 testastretta).

I'm sure you'll find those on here who've done it... I haven't... yet.

IMO, ST4s (996) for stump pulling street rocket... or if you love the top end rush... S4RS motor.

You have to modify the crankcase on the 916 to take the 888 swing arm if I recall correctly where as you dont with the ST4 engine . More information here

I'm almost finished with the process of installing a 2000 ST4 916 motor in my 1991 851 Strada. It's went pretty smooth so far. I would do a few things differently, but not much. The 916 is not the stump puller a 996 would be, but I couldn't argue with the deal I got. It's quite a bit more power than the 851 it replaced, especially after I get the 851 style Fast by Ferracci carbon slipons adapted to fit the ST4 header. I found that I can use 1 3/4" exhaust pipe to replace the portion in the rear header that interferes with the swingarm. It's within .4mm of an exact fit, and that's easily weldable. I'm taking pictures and measurements so that anyone wanting an ST4 header on a 851 can get a head start.

So after reading, reading and reading, would i be correct in assuming that the S4RS Deep Sump will fit and use the 888 swingarm, dose that mean the ST4S will also fit with out the need of swingarm/case reworks as above?

And what sort of performance difference would there be from the 888 to the ST4S? and again between the S4RS.

Some one please share, may help me in my quest to make the choice.

The S4RS and the ST4S,ST4,S4R swingarm/fitment are all compatible. The S4RS is not a simple "bolt-in".

The S4RS does bolt in. It has, as do all the other engines, 12mm motor mount bolts, so you will have to either drill the frame or make spacers to fit the engine and drop it down to 10mm. I would suggest drilling the frame to 12mm. The S4Rs will require constructing an exhaust, dealing with ECU issues (the S4RS has a linear TPS, others have non-linear), the Throttle Bodies have a different spacing so you will have to construct an airbox of some sort. The S4, ST4, ST4S, S4R are much easier to work with.

Do a search, Henrik and I have both used the S4RS engine.

My 1991 851 has a S4R (996). Mechanicly it is very stright forward. Basicly bigger diameter engine bolts.

What needs more work is the electrical part. I replaced the whole engine harnes to 916 P16, including the ECU. I am running with 851 airbox and throttle bodies, 916 chip and a PC3USB. You will also need a new regulator as the old one does not work and modify a few connectors to make the 916 wiring compatible with the 851 but it is actualy not difficult at all.

I am using ST-4 headers with silmoto slipons.

I think that the best would be to use a compleate ST4 wiring loom.
