wheel spindle/crash bung help

I have now got my Ohlins FG43 repaired after the accident at Cadwell and am now looking to stop it happening again!!

Basically i want to put some fork sliders on,but the SP5 wheel spindle is solid!!
So,i i have two options(unless anybody knows different):

1.Drill the spindle(it is solid) to take a standard available fork protector,what will this do to the strength etc?
2.Get an alternative hollow front spindle-i don't know what will fit.

Any ideas?

Why not just drill/tap the ends of the axle and attach bung with a bolt/socket head cap screw?

Marvin's suggestion sounds pretty good to me.
I've got hold of a set of SP4 FG9050's is your spindle different to that, because I'm about to get a spindle made for them, I'd not thought of a hollow spindle until today when Griff said he'd got an early 851 item that was hollow.
I'm thinking of getting it made from Titanium or non magnetic S/steel depending on the price, I'm dropping off Spike's spindle (that he's lent me as a pattern) at the engineers next week.

On another note how far are you away from getting the centre bells made for the full floaters, a mate of mine's SP(4)S has today failed it's MOT due to too much wear in his floaters, I thought of you straight away.
I'll ring my mate tomorrow and see if he's up for joining your list...

I'm lending him the front wheel from my 'Spare' 851/888 to get his bike through the test next week, it's easier than swapping his knackered discs with my spare set of lightweight 'race only' EBC discs.

The drill and tap option is good.Not sure how well the bung would stand up on the side that has the allen socket in.The threaded rod would be about 25mm long before it reached the hole.It may just rip off rather than wearing down.But it is an option.

Discs are on hold until you got a price from your mate.Drawings were sent.I'll send again.

I guess we're not on the same page here. I'm thinking that the bung would be counter bored with a socket head cap screw/washer. Same on both sides. You would have to slide half way around the track to get to the cap screw.

Hi Steve, what exactly did they fail on axial or radial play?

Hollow axles or a counter bore to locate the bung would be the ways to go IMHO.
