My new to me 92 851 Strada is shedding its skin on the engine case. I see it peeling off in a 2 inch by 3 inch piece in the rear lower area just below and between the swingarm. It's kind of silver/transparent and very thin. I didn't think there was any coating on the case but I've seen a few posts about paint peeling from the case. This is the main case, not the side case covers which I've also seen a lot of talk about. Is this condition any reason for concern?
Thanks,
Mark

I too have a '92 and the paint on stock cases is black, not silver. Your engine has either been repainted or it's actually a later model engine.
Either way I wouldn't sweat it. It's unsightly but by no means a problem unless you ride in a salt mine...
When your engine needs rebuilding you can repaint it then, This is exactly what I'm doing at present.
Paint is fussy and likes really tidy prepartations of the surface.

I'm sorry chris but you're wrong here the '92 models had silver C/Cases, the '91 and earlier had Black C/Cases.

I'll second the unpainted the C/cases with black side covers.

I had the same problem so I took the lot off. It looks better than half on, half off to my mind.

For one moment I thought you had stripped it down again Andy! 😯

I enjoying working on the bike but not that much 😁

Andy,
how about I send you a lot of bits and you bolt it together for me? 😉
How many Mars bars do you work for? Might stretch to a few beers providing it doesn't slow down your progress! 😝

Well this is Ducati for you - using up parts inventory. My bike is 99% stock and I have all black cases. Perhaps my bike has '91 cases...
Sorry for the confusion.

my sp3 has silver ones !!

I've got black C/cases on my '92 now, I painted them when most of the original silver fell off.
Hours of meticulous prep' and now 4 years later the black's peeling, from the small chips caused through use. 🙁
I used PJ1 Fast Gloss over an etching primer.
Ah well I'll just look on it as the patina of age. 😏

I've got my cases (2 engines) entirely dissassembled and plan to clearcoat the C/cases, cylinders and heads and go "bronze" on the outers, cam caps, inspection covers etc.. Hoping for a psuedo "factory" look. This is my one concession to BLING. I really hate it when a rebuilt engine is put back together with shabby looking cases. I know that performance is not affected but for the $$$$ it costs to do a good rebuild or performance work the engine should look the part from the outside too.
I have an anodizing set up at my shop and I'm tempted to anodize the entire works with the above colour scheme but castings can be tricky when it comes to consistent outcomes. Anodizing is also non-conductive and this would require consideration. Perhaps just anodizing for the clear bits?
I'll will likely go to an auto paint supplier and look for a good quality engine paint. Somehow I have the feeling that peeling is an eventuality but I'll take the process to the "nth" and curse my luck down the road...
I'm not worried about the track engine as it pretty much only sees rubber marbles so chips should be pretty rare...

I bought some very expensive paint when i rebuilded my Paso, but it peels of anyway. All my old Laverdas have blasted cases and polished covers. Not so easy to keep in good shape but there is nothing that peels of.
My new engine for my 93 strada will have non painted cases.
Cheers
