Another SP3 frame that I found an image of, again frame stamping looks like it was carried out by a five year old.
Looks like Spike and I are not the only ones with manual stamping on our frames.

I actually feel that my frame is a replacement ! i,m a little sadend that the only person who could shed a little more light on it when approached by some very helpfull people from this site was reluctant to talk about it ! my reasons for thinking its a replacement frame is as i,ve said before the stamping is in the coating and not in the metal , so to all purposes its a bare steel frame , no stamping in the metal at all , but as said before all numbers match and are verified by the factory . so i obviously have a frame coated and ready to go then was stamped up by the new owner , hmmm makes it a little easier to butcher it and paint it red !!!!

Question for everyone involved in the VIN thread.
Are EU or Italian 888, not imported in the US, stamped with a VIN that starts with ZDM888s.....?
I have identified a 888 in Europe, asked seller for info including the VIN and the above was the result.
Any input appreciated.

My SP5 starts ZDM888S

For the chassis number ZDM 888S at the beginning means it is one of the most of the rest of world( not U.S.) 888 SP series bikes (I believe Aus and NZ also has different VIN numbers). These bikes were never imported into the U.S. as they were not homologated for use on the road in that country..........
Ducati had to change too much on the SP3/4/5 series bikes to get them through emmisions and noise regulations and so created the SPO (SP look a like) with its own series of VIN numbers that was O.K. to be sold in the U.S. to satisfy demand. The first set of 250 were sold but only 75 of the second set of 250 were sold and the rest transported back to Italy. That is what makes the SPO very rare in the states. It is also the reason why there are some SPO,s in the rest of the world with the U.S. vin numbers floating around. The States is and always has been very protective of its own market and produces some of the hardest tests to comply with. Small manufacturers outside of the U.S. have a hard job (Deliberately).
Now of course anything is possible (?) but if you are thinking of buying an 888 SP bike and try to import into the U.S. you might have to go through a very expensive/lengthy single vehicle type approval that might not :
a. Be possible
b. Too expensive
c. Or not possible because what numbers would they allow
How do I know...........I worked for a while as an Homologation Engineer in the Automotive Industry..........a bloody nightmare that seems to be getting worse with more rules and regulations/directives every year.
Contact your local Importation office...........I,m sure vehicles are imported from Canada/Mexico so the office must exist somewhere and ask them for advice.
If you get some info , could you please share as I,m sure you will not be the only one in the U.S. who would want to import these European SP,s into the states.............Maybe someone has already managed it as an ornament or a track day toy (?)

No that would be really shit, if you went to all the trouble of getting it stateside to find it was only fit for looking at 🙁

I know someone in the States who bought an 888S frame (Without paperwork but a letter from Ducati proofing what it was) for a lot of money...................I don,t know if he ever suceeded in importing the bike , I don,t think so as he offered me the frame for sale at a huge price a couple of years ago. Maybe he has got lucky , maybe it is still in his garage as a nice ornament ..............it would be best to do some homework first. It is strange that you could buy a U.S. Strada and fit a V8 engine in it , create a monster and be able to ride it on the road in the U.S. (Look what Fast and Loud do with 50,s cars)............but not import a factory 888 SP bikes from the late 80,s/early 90,s because basically it never existed in the States. You can,t register/insure something that is not recognised ?????????.
