just a quickie , which side should the frame number be stamped ? and what type / font / stamp should be used

If you're talking about the serial number it should be on the headstock, right side. They are done in a stippled fashion. I did one with a small center punch, little dots make up the numbers/letter. I can take a pic of one if you need it.

Your bikes obviously a ringer, I'll give you £500 for it as it stands. 😉
Then crush it so that thieves will never prosper...
To be honest my eyes aren't that good these days and the font on my frame looks solid but when I run a finger over it it feels stippled as Marvin has described.
I think that you've probably been looking at the sad 851 on E-Bay, I looked at the frame numbers, but couldn't make them out and asking Nessie to have a look would be a waste of time as she hasn't a clue what she's looking at.

Mine is stamped too Spike. Right side of the frame headstock.

Mine (3- 92' 851's , a 94' Monster and a 97 Monster) look stamped too. But, if you look closely not stamped with traditional block stamps. A series of little "dots".

your right steve thats what got me thinking , the 851 on fleabay has an 888s number which i thought in that style frame was an sp frame ( old style footrest hangers and welded top tubes near the headstock ) and i pre dates mine by about 40 units but is like marvis pik having a stippled type of efect , mine is stamped by what looks like a set of stamps we used to use at school , no posh stars either just a stamped asterix type thing

do you mean stamped the same as marvins pik ? or stamped as in done in the metalwork class at school ?? when the battery decides to charge on my camera i,ll take a pik

mine is stamped as per school metalwork, I even thought that it was a bit fishy due to the paint finish around the headstock! 😯

Cannot show you pictures at the moment but might be getting my bikes from storage in the next few weeks.

Perhaps at some point a former owner purchased a new frame without numbers and stamped them himself.
A friend bought a new frame from Ferracci which had no numbers.

I am beginning to think that Ducati frames say <93, or frames with 13 digit VIN numbers are stamped, but not in the dimple fashion. Here's the stamped VIN # from the headstock of my SP4.

I have just got back from picking up an 851 frame and noticed that the frame numbers are stamped on a plate welded to the headstock.

It is supposed to be an 1989 registered bike, anybody come across this as well?

Mine is an 89 and is stamped with old fashioned number stamps , but is quite an early one with a three digit number . Could that possibly be a replacement frame and someone has added the original bikes details ?

All joking aside Spike and Peter/SP2boy,
Those frame numbers look as dodgy as hell to me, if I was buying a bike I wouldn't touch either of those with a very long barge pole.😯
That plate welded over the original headstock frame number wouldn't even fool PC Plumb from Balamoray.
The word 'Ringers' comes to my mind.
