My 1990 851 rebuiled project

Hi all, Please excuse my first few attempts i have contacted marvin regarding this.

I thought i'd start a project thread of my 851 i recently purchased.

She's a non runner at the moment, hasn't ran i around 6-7 months due to only having spark at one lead. She's been sitting at my factory looking unloved so hopefully i can bring her back to life.

Plan is to completely strip her down and rebuiled fully to original spec with a few upgrades along the way. Hopefully with your help and advice i can get her back on the road.

A few questions to start with:

Can anyone tell me the exact model of 851 i have?

Can anyone spot any parts that are after market or wrong for the year of 1990?

Also she has a thermigoni exhaust system, can anyone tell me a rough value this may be worth?

And finally, any words of wisdom?

Look forward to posting up my progress as things move on and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

if its a 90 i think it should have rwu forks not the usd ones , could be wrong but i had 90 mono strada and did,nt have showa on , also as mentioned gold wheels , should be white , bar end weights missing and the throttle looks abit shiny , nice pipes whish i had em ...

I was told the forks had been changed to some from a 900s if i can recall correctly.

Bar end weights? not to sure what these are?

The throttle is shiney as you say so i assume this is not original?

Wheels are on my list to be repainted white.

I think im going to go back to the original pipes. Due you have any idea of value on my current ones?

just got some old piks out , mine did,nt have bar end weights on !! funny how time plays tricks on your mind and the throttle looks similar yours might just have been polished ! as for the pipes someone on here will rip your arms off for them if they are termis , put em on ebay you,ll get good money for em , i like em but dont tell Mr R

Ok thanks for the information. I have the original cans so i may go back to those although there not in great condition. i also think ihave the original receipt for the termi's i'll have a look through the history see if i can dig it out.

Just had a closer look at the throttle and its definatly ducati so as you say maybe its been polished up.

termi cans fitted on mine in1996 were 588 gbp then , they were swapped in 97 for a full works spag skorpion for 1650 gbp 😯

Well, these are tricky questions. Here you have my opinion of what model it could be: the frame (actually the foot rests) and the front fork suggest a 1991 model. The mirrors you have (the black ones), I've seen on earlier models than the 1991s (but mostly you see them without mirrors in the brochures). The 1991 model and later had red mirrors. The bridge of the rear suspension looks yellow, which could mean it's the suspension of the 1993 model, which was an 888 equipped with Showa's. There were also 851's with white bridges, same brand but model 1991.
The gold wheels were used on the 1989 models, but on the photo's they seem to look a bit different than yours. And the 1990 model had a bigger front mudguard. Yours seems to be 1991 or later. And lastly the front brakes are black on the 1990 model and gold coloured from the 1992 model onwards.
So except for the wheels, I would say: 1991.
Oh, I almost forgot: the front suspension of the 1990 model were Marzocchi M1R.

92's also had a yellow suspension bridge.

Sure looks like a 91' unless someone switched later parts on an earlier model. Mirrors don't really mean anything as they are easy to switch to later units, (especially if the originals started to "droop"). Definitely no later than 91" given the small radiator, frame, bodywork, radiator hose set-up, etc.

Looks like i have some investigating to do.

The suspension bridge is indeed yellow and on further inspection the rear shock adjuster (if thats the right word) has a green/white/black sticker and from what i can see one letter is an M. I'll try get a picture up later today.

The front forks i have been told were changed to that from a 900s/ss model? but thats only a guess rearly.

I was going to ask about the mirrors, i prefer the red ones. i've seen some available on ebay but there quite pricey.

the round mirrors are very scarce these days and i may be wrong but i thought the front sub frame was different to suit the single bolt mount rather than the two bolt mount of the rectangular mirrors. if it is a '90 the forks should be marzocchi M1R's which would dictate the bulky guard, as the showas are on there the guard that suits is in place. the rear hoop should be white, not yellow and the wheels should also be white. Due to the frame having the welded top tubes and the older style rearset mounts it's no later than a '91 but to know for sure you should fax ducati the engine and vin numbers to see if it's a factory pair and the manufacture date. I can understand changing the forks to later ones, and painting the wheels is a personal preference but unless there was a difference in the rising rate (was there?) why change the rear hoop? In the end it's all academic, it's not an SP so collectibility isn't really an issue, i'd take the time to strip it and replace what needs it and make it your own. oh, keep the termis!

With regards to the mirrors, as can be seen in the picture below the mirror base has two bolts but only one attaches to the front frame.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a company i can get the rubber nuts used in various places around the bike? any idea on the sizes and numbers i'll need?

Hi, you can go for the giovannimoto in ebay, I have bought from them in the past and they are very good quality parts.
They have ruber nuts fot the screen and farings.
