Ducati 888 SP5 Internal Dust Cover.

Gentlemen,

I am hoping to obtain an original Ducati internal dust cover for an 888 SP5.

My searches so far have failed to confirm if a specific cover for the 888 was supplied with the bikes, or was available separately at the time, and if so the relevant part number.

I believe Ducati Performance did produce covers at the time that may have been suitable for an 888, but so far have been unable to obtain any details.

I have made enquiries with people who may have come across options when the bikes were in production, but so far without success.

As a fallback position, I have looked at covers available for more recent bikes, but there is no way of confirming if they will fit an 888 prior to buying.

Ducati currently offer a “multifit” cover, but do not include the 888 in the applicable models.

I have located a cover that I am told will fit a 916, but the seller could not confirm whether it would also fit an 888.

If any forum members have details relating to suitable OEM internal covers for the 888, I should be most grateful if they would pass on such details, to assist my ongoing search. Details of covers available when the bikes were in production would be ideal, but also details of any options currently available would also be most welcome.

I have a genuine period correct 916 cover (part # 919.1.001.1A) for my 916 SP3 and I can garantee it will not work on my 851.

I would say that the older covers are more nostalgic, than as good as the modern stuff.

I use a plain Red one from Classic Additions and even though there isn’t one for the 888, they do offer the 851 option with their Standard Covers and you can add logos (you might want to check what versions of the logos they have and suggest one that you would prefer, like the Cagiva Logo ot Ducati 888 in the Cagiva era font…). They seem to offer a bespoke service found on this link Custom Cover, which I would suggest would be a direction to explore as they can make one you would be proud about having on your bike.

Many thanks for this information and your recommendation.

I’ve checked both links, but the custom cover link does not offer an 888 or 851 model version.

However, I have sent them a message describing what I have in mind, suggesting a Cagiva logo at the front and the word Ducati in period correct font on each side. I have attached images of the both logos in one of the requested vector formats, and asked for any recommendations they may have.

I’ll wait for their response and let you know what they say.

Hello, and Happy New Year!

Thank you for this information which confirms my concern that covers made for the later bikes would not fit an 851/888 correctly, although some suppliers are saying quite the opposite.

I have a number of covers for previous models and while they may cover the bike they do not fit particularly well.

I have now had a response to my query with Classic Additions bike covers suggested by Bridgland, and they will make a cover to fit an 851/888 in Red with a Cagiva logo at the front and the word Ducati in the period correct font on each side for ~£140.00p, which is about the same as the one offered by Ducati Performance, which was not made for the 851/888.

My current intention is to buy the cover from Classic Additions, but to continue searching in the longer term for a period correct cover, to compliment a virtually original motorcycle.

Do you know if they will provide a visual of that cover project and what quality of fabric they will use? I may be interested as well, if it matches the model year 1990 graphics. Would they consider applying « 851 » or « 888 » as well?

From my exchanges with them, they seem willing and able to reproduce most images, if they have a suitable sample to work from.

I originally asked for a Cagiva logo on the front made to my sample, and “Ducati” in a matching font on each side.

They replied suggesting appropriate sizes, I have responded with a reproduction of my tank logo, and asked if they would use that as the sample for the sides, again at an appropriate size and scale.

It seems they have produced covers for John Surtees and Sir Sterling Moss, as satisfied customers!

This is an update to progress with buying a custom version of the Classic Additions indoor bike cover.

They have been most helpful in discussing options for a custom finished cover that they are able to produce.

In my previous message I included a Cagiva logo for the front of the cover, on the nose of the bike, and an image of the tank logo to be reproduced on the middle of each side of the cover.

They have spent time considering what I asked for, and have confirmed they are confident about reproducing the logos in a suitable way, and in fact they have previously applied the tank logo to a cover using the same font, and I see that as encouraging. We have also explored the sizes and dimension ratios that would permit using a suitable size logo on the cover, without risking distortion of the images, and settled on sizing that they are confident will look correct.

So, I intend to go ahead with this cover, and I’ll provide a further update when I receive it.

I can assure you the covers are superb. They are super stretchy and extra soft on the inside. I would always look to use them for any future bikes too.
