Restore or build back with period mods ? 851 Kit racer .

Ok , i have a very interesting ( i think ) 851 race bike , was raced till around 1990 from @88 .

But it has different swing arm , footrest mountings , Air shock , adjustable forks and Technomagnesion wheels !

Quite valuable nowadays as a restored Kit racer , but i have several of those already …

I know the team it started with and the one it finished with and some rider history too !

Anyway , restore or Build period ( 1990) spec ?

This was Poggipolinis race bike at Misano in 88 , see pic …

Strange swing arm and air shock , technomagnesio wheels and frame mounted footrests and exhaust , forks and caliper plates all unique to this bike / era .

Looking for more info on poggipolini and team , if I remember right poggopolini was a parts manufacturer that supplied ducati juicy parts ?

Fair enough. What’s the go with the fuel tank. The pic with the red tank has the later model lump at the front, is that for the build or are looking for the early model tank?

The one with the lump in it is a very early carbon tank , think its gia ca moto .

Both came with the bike ….

But I've not got any right side pics to go by ( of single pipes on early race bikes ) …..

That’s all a bit odd on 2 counts.

Why would you want more mid range at the expense of top end hp. (Haven’t got rock solid on the whole 2-1 thing, but after reading about it, there is consensus that’s what they do. Unless it was track specific for some reason.
The front header normally runs under the cases, so if the header is attached to the head, wow, how the hell do you join those headers to anything. 😄

I take it the header is just unbolted for shipping, the world’s your oyster. So, some of those long skinny nasties would be nice. Incredibly noisy as a bonus. You have one, need two, bad place to be. First, so the search begins, second perhaps a reconnaissance on how much to get one made up.

The swing arm is a beauty, I’ve seen that mod somewhere before. I assume it makes for faster wheel change and definitely the bonus it gives you a bit longer wheel base for stability and the chain guard bracket is already there. Quick clean and close inspection. Ready to rock and roll.

I have 851 1990 engine bits left, it’s a race bike, could be something a bit dodgy, feel free to pm when the time comes, I might have something useful. I’m a bit of a fan of the old race bike. Trying to go faster than the factory is a pretty big challenge. Hours, the odd beer/ vino and some heavy thought about how to go faster and not kill the pilot. Kudos to them all.

I have several kit contis nos and also had some made , but this bike came with those front pipes !

They are attached in that pic and as I want this to be different ( and it came with it ) I 'd like the option of a single silencer , hence wanting to see a pic of one from the other side ….

I'd imagine this would be used for parades or classic track days in end , so hp is not the aim but period weirdness definitely is !

LD Servesios guy is still around and I may be able to get more info out of him !

Hey nothing wrong with trying to contact those involved. I was a little shocked to find out that the NCR guys are still around. Brook says he regularly has chats, and stays at one guys house when he goes to Italy.

I ring around all over the place try to work out do I replicate, replace, rebuild. No shame there.

I had a pantah powered race bike, fairly famous. Everything taken to extreme. (No paint on frame).

A guy I know brought it and said I want it back on the track. I do my research. Frame is made from a crop duster that ploughed in around 1978/9. Right so it’s either 0.7 or 0.9 chrome moly probably Reynolds. It’s been painted, but spotty rust marks. Rh foot peg mount is bent as well. Magnesium wheels.

I measured the rust pitting. 0.2mm, game over. Didn’t even get onto the engine, all ready got worded up about the con rods and crank from a previous owner who tried on the track 20 years ago.

So it’s, sorry mate, museum piece only. You could replicate a new frame, do a big engine rebuild, but then it wouldn’t be this legendary bike would it!
