1994 888 Strada fuel filler parts

Hi All,

As part of refurbishing my fuel tank, I disassembled the fuel filler cap. When I took it apart the was a small spring, about 7mm long and 2mm diameter and a very small ball bearing, around 2mm diameter came out, but I don't know where from. I am now reassembling the whole lot, so I need to know where this tiny spring and ball bearing go. I thought maybe they push against the key flap "shaft" to keep it up in place, but I am not sure.

I tried the workshop manual and searching the internet, but I couldn't find any relevant information.

@johnboy, the ball bearing fits against and indent in the key "flap" as you describe. Be very careful when you reinstall, that bearing likes to spontaneously launch itself into orbit, never to be seen again. Make sure when you are compressing the spring when installing the retaining clip that you are pushing straight against it. If the spring is not perpendicular to the clip the bearing will want to fly away.

Thanks for your reply tboooe, I was beginning to wonder if the spring and ball bearing were actually part of this overly complicated fuel filler, so it's good to know they are. Can you clarify if the ball bearing and spring are both place at the same end of the shaft, or opposite ends ? I actually reassembled it without both ball bearing and spring to see what it would be like. I have the other spring installed, the one that keeps the key flap down. Cheers, John

Hi there. I am not sure what you mean by the end of the shaft? The spring and bearing are pushed against the key flap by the little clip shown in your second pic. If you look closely at the flap you should see two small indents where the bearing fits into when the flap is closed and fully open. I hope that makes sense.
