851 Cowling Fitment

Hi gang!

I'm now 3 years into getting my '91 851 to factory new condition, and it's been so long now that I've taken it apart, that I'm having a hard time visualizing how things go back together. I tried looking at schematics and pictures, but just need a gut check.

Is the cowling itself secured to the bike only by the mirror mount? I know the fairings tie into it to make it more secure, but are the mirror mount points the only ones?

If it's the same as the 851 SP3, I believe the front fairing is mainly held on by the mirror mounts - two nuts and bolts each side. On the SP3 at least, there are two flexible infill panels which are held onto the front fairing and the main side fairings by two screws each. There are also three bolts each side which screw into well-nuts on the side fairings.

Doesn't that secure the fairing, not the nose cone?

I would like to see those if possible, and to see how much of the headlight seal you should see. At this stage myself.

On the 888 the front cowling is attached by the mirror bolts (two each side) to the cowling bracket/headlamp bracket. There are no other cowling attachments directly to this bracket. I think the SP3 is similar but has a single bolt each side rather than two.

Would post a picture but unable to due to site permissions (and I pay) and no one seems to be able to address/fix the this issue.

Thanks a bunch gang! I got it figured out after test fitting everything, and the pictures above helped immensely. The headlight gasket goes on first, and does provide some support for the cowling. It's also tied into the air deflectors. Just waiting on a handful of parts and I'll be done!

I stand corrected! On the SP3, only one of the two bolts securing each mirror to the bike actually attaches to the front sub-frame; the other one just secures the mirror to the front fairing. Sorry if I caused any confusion, but it sounds like you've got it sorted anyway.
